Folk Music of Uttar Pradesh

The music and melodies of Uttar Pradesh are deeply rooted in its folk traditions, reflecting the emotions and daily lives of common people. This ancient and diverse music includes ragas such as Kafi, Peelu, Vrindavani, and Sarang, which all have their origins in Uttar Pradesh's folk music. Read about some of the well-known folk songs from the region:-

Birha -This is the most famous folk song of Uttar Pradesh and is popular in eastern Uttar Pradesh. It is typical theme is the sombre mood of lamenting wives who have been separated from their husband. Later, Birha became admired for public entertainment. Bihari Yadav of Ghazipur is the 1^st Birha singer. Padamshri Hiralal Yadav, Baleshwar Yadav, Vijay Lal Yadav, Ramkishanu Yadav are the famous Birha singers.
Kajri - This is a famous folk song of eastern Uttar Pradesh which is sung during the month of Shravan. Along with Bhojpuri, it is sung in Maithili and Magahi. Its origin is from Mirzapur in the Purvanchal region. It was initially sung to honour Vindhyavasini Devi. However, later love affairs of Radha and Krishna were included in its theme. Kajri has a prominence of Shringar Ras in its compositions. The rainy season, separation and love episodes of Radha Krishna are the typical themes, Kajri.
Rasiya-This is the most famous folk song of Braj. It has theme is love episodes of Radha and Krishna. Rasiya songs are sung during festivals, especially during Holi in the Braj region. The songs are sung with the Bump which is a huge drum.
Faag- It is sung on the occasion of Holi. Faag has typical themes of natural beauty and the love affairs of Radha-Krishna. It is originally from eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Sohar-It is a popular folk song of the Awadh region. It is sung at the time of childbirth. The song is used to depict the life cycle of humans.
Alha-This is a folk song of the Bundelkhand region. Alha originated from Mahoba and are heroic ballad songs which narrate the heroic deeds of Alha and Udal. Alha and Udal were legendary warriors in the service of Raja Parmar of Mahoba. Alha songs are sung in Braj, Awadhi and Bhojpuri languages.
Marsiya - These are sad songs sung by the Shia Muslim community. The word Marsiya refers to the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, who was the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
