Phase I- Preliminary Selection Phase I is also known as Screening Test. This phase consists of two major tests.

  • Officer Intelligence Rating Test: This test tests the fundamental reasoning ability and mental skills of the candidates. This test consists of verbal and non-verbal questions which assess the reasoning ability of the candidates.
  • Picture Perception and Description Test: In this test, candidates are shown a blurred or unclear picture. Candidates have to make a story based on that picture which measures their ability of observation skills.

Phase II-Phase II consists of various tests that assess the mental, physical and behavioural abilities of the candidates:

  • Psychology Tests: It includes word association, picture situation, situation response and autobiographical tests, which evaluate the thinking process and mental state of the candidate.
  • Interview: The personal interview consists of questions on the personality, education, career goals and general awareness of the candidate.
  • Group Testing Officer Tasks (GTO): It consists of activities that test teamwork, leadership and problem-solving skills, such as group discussions, group planning, and progressive group tasks.
  • Conference: This is the final stage, where all the board members evaluate the candidate and the list of selected candidates is released.

UPSC CDS Exam Merit List

  1. UPSC creates a list of candidates who achieve the minimum qualifying marks in the written exam set by the commission.
  2. Candidates who pass the written exam are invited for an intelligence and personality test (SSB Interview).
  3. Candidates must achieve separate qualifying marks in both the written exam and the SSB Interview.
  4. The final merit list is based on the total marks obtained in the written exam and the SSB Interview.
  5. Final selection is made based on merit, considering medical fitness and the available vacancies.

How To Calculate CDS Result Score?

  1. Each correct answer in the test earns the candidate one mark.
  2. For each incorrect response, 1/3 marks are deducted from the total score.
  3. If a candidate selects more than one option for a question, it is marked as a wrong answer.
  4. The total score is determined by adding the marks for correct answers and subtracting the deductions for incorrect answers.
