Commonwealth Games 2022
The Commonwealth Games is an international, multi-sport event which involves athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth Games are managed by the Commonwealth Games Federation, based in London, England.
History of Commonwealth Games
Astley Cooper from Australia first proposed the idea of such kind of games in 1891, with the motive of demonstrating the unity of the British Empire and then for the very first time in 1911, at the enthroning of King George V, an ‘Inter-Empire Championships’ was held in United Kingdom. Four nations participated were Australasia, Canada, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Sports it included were athletics, boxing, wrestling and swimming.
The first official Commonwealth Games which was known as the British Empire Games were held in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. At that time there were 400 athletes came from11 countries to compete in total 59 events across six sports: athletics, boxing, lawn bowls, rowing, aquatics (swimming and diving) and wrestling. women were allowed to compete only in swimming events. Countries which participated were: Australia, Bermuda, British Guyana, Canada, England, Northern Ireland, Newfoundland, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and Wales.
Since 1930, the Games have been taking place every four years, except in 1942 and 1946 due to second world war.
Commonwealth Games 2022 or Birmingham 2022
Out of the 72 Commonwealth Games Associations, India will be one of them to participate in the Commonwealth Games 2022 aka Birmingham 2022. It is scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 8 in Birmingham, England. It will be the 18th times that India will be participating in CWG. India has sent a 215-member contingent for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The athletes will be participating in 15 different sports at the Games, hoping to break the 100-medal barrier.
