History of CRPF

CRPF was established before independence. CRPF is the only paramilitary force in the country that deviates from its original date of formation.

  • The CRPF is one of the oldest Central ParaMilitary Forces of India, originally formed on 27 July 1939 as the “Crown Representative’s Police”.
  • After independence, the “Crown Representative’s Police” was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force by an Act of Parliament on 28 December 1949. Central Reserve Police Force has completed 84 years of glorious history.
  • The CRPF was established in 1936 following the Madras Resolution of the All India Congress Committee in response to political unrest and agitations in the then princely states of India and the wishes of the Crown Representative to preserve law and order in India.
  • In the context of the 1962 Indo-China war, the CRPF demonstrated its support to the Indian Army by offering assistance in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Moreover, during the Indo-Pak wars of 1965 and 1971, the CRPF played a crucial role by providing unwavering support to the Indian Army on both the Western and Eastern borders.
  • In these conflicts, the CRPF stood side by side with the Indian Army, offering their dedicated service and commitment to defending the nation.
