CRPF History

The CRPF was established in 1939 as the Crown Representative Police, making it one of the oldest central paramilitary forces in the country (now known as the Central Armed Police Forces). Its first Director General was Shri V.G. Kanetkar. Following the Madras Resolution of the All India Congress Committee in 1936, the CRPF was formed to control the growing political unrest and rebellion in the princely states of India. It was a part of the imperial policy, which felt the need to maintain law and order to assist the native states.

• After Independence, the force was renamed as Central Reserve Police Force by an Act of Parliament on December 28, 1949.
• This Act constituted CRPF as an armed force of the Union. Sardar Vallabh bhai Patel, the then Home Minister,  visualized a multi-dimensional role for it in tune with the changing needs of a newly independent nation.
• The CRPF Rules as envisaged in CRPF Act were framed in 1955 and published in the Gazette of India dated March 25, 1955.

CRPF- Roles and Responsibilities

The primary role of CRPF is to assist the government in maintaining rule of law, internal security  and public order efficiently. to ensure  National Integrity and Promote Social Harmony and Development by upholding the supremacy of the Constitution.

Broad duties being performed by the CRPF are:

1. Internal Security: CRPF plays a vital role in maintaining internal security and combating various forms of insurgency, terrorism, and left-wing extremism in different parts of the country. They assist the state police forces in restoring law and order and conducting counter-terrorism operations.
