The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s most prestigious recognition in cinema introduced in 1969. It is presented by the Directorate of Film Festivals which functions under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It is presented to honour the artists for their “outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.”.

Dadasaheb Phalke Award

It derived its name from Dhundiraj Govind Phalke, who is considered the father of Indian cinema. He was a veteran filmmaker who directed India’s first full-length feature film titled Raja Harishchandra in 1913. The awardees are honoured with a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.

Famous personalities like Satyajit Ray, Nagi Reddy, Raj Kapoor, Lata Mangeshkar, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Dilip Kumar, Sivaji Ganesan, and Asha Bhosle are some of the notable awardees.

For the year 2019, it was awarded to a famous film star Rajnikanth on 25 October 2021 for his timeless and majestic contribution to Indian cinema as an actor, producer and screenwriter. The actor has formerly been honoured with Padma Awards– Padma Bhushan (2000) and Padma Vibhushan (2016). As of 2022, there have been 52 awardees. Awards were suspended for the years 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus.

In keeping with the over 60-year-old tradition, President Droupadi Murmu and information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur will on September 30 2022 confer the 68th national film awards, two years after the Covid-19 pandemic discontinued the prestigious event. Veteran actress Asha Parekh has been declared the recipient of the 2020 Dadasaheb Phalke award, making her the 52nd awardee of the honour.
