Hindi Diwas 2022
One of the major languages of India is Hindi. Every year Hindi Diwas is celebrated on the 14th of September. This day highlights the significance of the Hindi language and inspires younger generations to use it more often. Globally, Approximately 120 million people speak Hindi as a second language, and over 420 million people speak it as their first language. Hindi is considered the fourth most-spoken first language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese, Spanish and English.
On Hindi Diwas, various Ministries, Departments, PSUs, Nationalised Banks, and citizens receive awards like the Rajbhasha Kirti Puraskar and the Rajbhasha Gaurav Puraskar to commemorate their contributions to the Hindi language.
The Department of Official Language of the Ministry of Home Affairs discharges many important responsibilities with a view to increase the progressive use of Hindi in the official work of the Union and to ensure compliance with all statutory and legal provisions.
Hindi Diwas 2022: How Did the Celebration of the Hindi Divas Begin?
After the independence of India, the tradition of celebrating this day started to mark the importance of Hindi in India. Hindi written in Devanagari script was chosen as the official language of India on 14 September 1946 by the Constituent Assembly.
Hindi Diwas 2022: Hindi in Indian Constitution
- The Indian constitution, in 1950, declared Hindi in Devanagari script to be the official language of the union. Unless Parliament decided otherwise, the use of English for official purposes was to cease 15 years after the constitution came into effect, i.e., on 26 January 1965.
- The provisions related to the Hindi language are regulated by the Central Hindi Directorate, Government of India.
- Article 351 of Part 17 of the Constitution of India gives clear instructions for the development of the Hindi language.
