How to become a Pilot in Indian Air Force through AFCAT?

Becoming Pilot in the Indian Air Force is a dream of many young men and women. What are the educational Qualification needed to become Pilot?

To become Pilot in the Indian Air Force, A candidate must have Math and Physics at 12th level with 50% in both of them. In addition to that, to appear in the AFCAT exam he/she must have completed graduation in any of the stream with 60% marks or be in last year of graduation with no present backlogs.

Educational Qualification for Flying Branch
Compulsory Math and Physics at 12th level with 50% in each.
And
Graduation in any discipline from a recognized university with 60%
OR
BE/B Tech degree (Four years course) from a recognized University with a minimum of 60%
OR
Candidates who have cleared Section A & B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers (India) or Aeronautical Society of India from a recognized University with a minimum of 60% marks or equivalent.

What is the Age limit for Pilot?

The age limit for becoming pilot and to apply for flying branch for both men and women is 20 to 24 years old. According to the official notification, The candidates born between 2 July 2001 to 1 July 2005 can apply for Flying Branch.

Candidates already holding a Commercial Pilot License are given two years relaxation and they can apply for Pilot in the IAF between age 20-26.

Physical standard for Pilots

It is compulsory to meet the physical standards established by the Indian Air Force. The minimum height for males and females for flying branch is 162.5 cm.

Physical Standard for Flying Branch are same for Men and Women 
Minimum Height 162.5 cm
Sitting Height (Minimum) 81.5 cm
Sitting Height (Maximum) 96.0 cm
Leg length (Minimum) 99.0 cm
Leg length (Maximum) 120.0 cm
Thigh Length (Maximum) 64.0 cm

What is CPSS/PABT?

The AFSB Interview for Flying Branch will include one more test that Non flying branch candidates can not give. It is known as Computerised Pilot Selection System (CPSS) which was earlier known as (PABT) Pilot Aptitude Battery Test.

CPSS/PABT is a once in a lifetime examination. Candidates are given only one chance to pass this Test. A Candidate once appearing for Pilot test is not allowed to appear again for it irrespective of the armed forces. If a Candidate fails the CPSS, he can never join Indian Air Force as a Pilot. A Candidate who gets recommended is administered for CPSS.  Candidates who have failed the CPSS/ PABT in an earlier attempt or a Flight Cadet suspended from flying training at Air Force Academy will not be eligible.

Medical Examination

Candidates joining the Flying Branch have to undergo a rigorous medical examination test for to be declared fit for flying the aircrafts. The physical standards for Flying Branch are highest and Indian Air Force does not compromise with the quality of officers. A candidate aspiring to join the IAF should take good care of their health and wellbeing.
