General Cariappa, later Field Marshal, marked a significant milestone as the first-ever Indian to lead the Army, succeeding the last British-serving chief, General Sir Bucher.

  • Field Marshal Cariappa, affectionately known as ‘Kipper,’ received his King’s Commission in 1919 and was among the initial Indian cadets at the Royal Military College in Sandhurst, UK.
  • He was the first Indian to attend the Staff College in Quetta and achieved the distinction of commanding a Battalion.
  • In 1942, Field Marshal Cariappa established the 7th Rajput Machine Gun Battalion, later renamed 17 Rajput.
  • Recognized for his contributions, KM Cariappa was honored with the rank of Field Marshal in 1986.
  • Field Marshal Cariappa passed away at the age of 94 in 1993, leaving behind a remarkable legacy in the history of the Indian Army.
