Indian Navy Day 2022
Navy Day is observed on December 4, every year. This day highlights the achievements and role of the Indian Navy in the country, especially the victory of Operation Trident conducted by the Indian Navy.
The Indian Navy contributes significantly to safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders, and in conjunction with other Armed Forces of the union, acts to deter or defeat any threats or aggression against the territory, people or maritime interests of India, both in war and peace through a variety of activities such as port visits, collaborations, patriotic missions, disaster relief, and many others. Its main objective is to enhance its position in the Indian Ocean Region.
Since its formation, the modern Indian Navy has undergone notable changes to bolster its position in the Indian Ocean region.
Operation Trident was launched against Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani War in 1971 in which The Indian Navy showed exemplary courage as they sank four Pakistani vessels including PNS Khaibar, killing hundreds of Pakistani Navy personnel. Indian Navy valiantly tackled Pakistani forces on the Karachi border during this operation on December 4, 1971. During the attack, Indian sailors communicated in Russian to avoid detection. No Indian sailors were killed in the attack.
Since then, Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year to honour the marines who sacrificed their lives in the war.
Indian Navy Day 2022: Theme and celebration
- The theme of Indian Navy Day 2022 is “Swarnim Vijay Varsh”. Navy Week is observed from 1 to 7 December.
- On this day, The Indian Navy demonstrated India’s combat prowess and capability through an ‘Operational Demonstration’ at Visakhapatnam on December 4, 2022.
- General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral R Hari Kumar Chief of Naval Staff, Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari Chief of Air Staff & Lt Gen BS Raju, Vice Chief of Air Staff paid homage to the brave hearts at the NationalWarMemorial on the occasion of NavyDay.
- “We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to preserving protect & promote our National Interests & to remaining a CombatReady, Credible, Cohesive & FutureProof Force. We pay homage to the supreme sacrifices of our Bravehearts & gratitude to our veterans” said, Admiral R Hari Kumar
Navy Day Significance:
- The purpose to celebrate Navy Day is to acknowledge and appreciate the Indian Navy’s achievements and increase awareness about the Navy amongst Indian Citizens.
- It was decided that Navy Day would be celebrated on 4 December at the Senior Naval Officer’s Conference in May 1972.
- The objective of the celebration is to commemorate the actions of the Indian Navy’s ‘Operation Trident’ at Karachi harbour as it was decisive in securing India’s victory in the 1971 war.
