List of Hydro Power Plants in India 2022
India, a country with a more than 1.4 billion population is the world’s third largest electricity consumer and producer. Its installed capacity is 403.7 GW as of June 2022. Out of which, more than sixty percent are produced using fossil fuels and thermal power plants. Currently, around 46,209 MW is produced n India using Hydro Power Plants.
Hydro power is one of the most cheap, environment friendly and broadly utilized renewable sources of energy among all the other sources available in the country. Hydropower basically means the Power which is generated from water and using that power, electricity is produced which is termed as Hydro electricity. Gravitational force of falling water id used to create that required energy. The best advantage of using hydropower is that it neither produces any direct waste matter nor is subjected to exhaustion.
The potential for hydro-electric potential in terms of installed capacity in India is estimated to be about 148,700 MW out of which a capacity of 42,783 MW (28.77%) has been produced so far and 13,616 MW (9.2 %) of capacity is under production.
As of now, India has 197 Hydro Power plants. India is endowed with an immense amount of hydroelectric potential and it has the fifth largest hydropower potential in terms of exploitable hydroelectric energy in the world. Top four countries are China, US, Brazil and Canada. The power generated from hydroelectric plants is used for several purposes.
