The office of prime minister was established in Britain in the 18th century, when King George I stopped attending meetings of his ministers and it was left to powerful minsters to act as government chief executive and considering that authoritative post, Sir Robert Walpole is considered as the first prime minister of Britain.
The Prime Minister is the leader of Her Majesty’s Government and He is the one who is majorly responsible for all the policy and decisions taken by the government.
Other than this, he has other duties too like –
- monitoring the operation of the Civil Service and other government agencies
- selecting the members of the government
- is the head of government in the House of Commons
Since he is also the Minister of the Union, so he also ensures the functioning of the government on behalf of the entire United Kingdom: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The official residence of the Prime Minister of Britain is 10 Downing Street, London.
