Youth Affairs and Sports Ministry announced the National Sports Awards 2023. The awardees had received their awards from the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Badminton duo Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty received the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the country’s highest sporting honour, from President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

Who was Major Dhyan Chand?
Major Dhyan Chand, renowned as “The Wizard” of field hockey, was an exceptionally skilled player who represented India in international hockey from 1926 to 1949, amassing an impressive tally of over 400 goals.
- Hailing from Allahabad, Dhyan Chand was a vital part of the Olympic gold-winning teams in 1928, 1932, and 1936.
- Besides the Khel Ratna Award, the Dhyan Chand Award is the highest recognition in India for a lifetime of sports achievements, established in 2002. On the 29th of August every year, India observes National Sports Day in honor of Major Dhyan Chand, who was born on that date in 1905.
- Starting from August 6, 2021, this award was renamed in honor of Major Dhyan Chand (1905–79), an iconic Indian field hockey player celebrated as one of the greatest in the sport’s history, having netted over 1000 goals during a remarkable 20-year career spanning from 1926 to 1948.
