The target under the scheme was to provide concessional LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) connections to over 50 million below-poverty-line (BPL) families in three years, with government support of Rs 1,600 per connection.
Under the Union Budget for FY 21-22, provision for the release of an additional 1 Crore LPG connections under the PMUY scheme has been made in which a special facility will be provided to migrant families.
PMUY scheme aims to provide clean-cooking fuel to poor households vulnerable to various health hazards associated with indoor air pollution and to bring in qualitative changes in the living standards of BPL families. Beneficiaries are identified through Socio-Economic Caste Census List 2011.
- Under Ujjwala 1.0, the target was to provide LPG connections to 50 million women from the below poverty line (BPL) households, by March 2020. However, in August 2018, women from seven other categories were brought under the purview of the scheme: SC/ST, those under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), beneficiaries of the Antyoday Anna Yojana (AAY), forest dwellers, most backward classes, tea gardens and Islands).
- Also, the target of the scheme was later revised to 80 million LPG connections. This was achieved in August 2019, seven months earlier of the March 2020 deadline. As of July 30, 2021, the number of connections provided under the scheme stand at 79,995,022.
-
Under Ujjwala 2.0, migrant workers can avail a free cooking gas connection on the basis of a self-declaration without any need for documents like address proof. Ujjwala 2.0 aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to low-income families who could not be covered under the first phase of PMUY.

Along with deposit-free access to LPG supplies, the beneficiaries will also be provided with a stove (hotplate) free of cost. Under the scheme, the first gas cylinder is free worth over Rs 800, but consumers need to pay for subsequent cylinders.
