UNSC Full Form History
The United Nations was founded just after World War II, after a long process of negotiations. World War II, and before this, World War I, had led to excessive suffering and destruction. The United Nations Security Council was established as one of the six main organs of the United Nations.
Following the 1943 Moscow Conference and Tehran Conference, in mid-1944, the delegations from the Allied “Big Four“, the Soviet Union, the UK, the US, and the Republic of China, met for the Dumbarton Oaks Conference in Washington, D.C. to negotiate the UN’s structure,[17] and the composition of the UN Security Council quickly became the dominant issue. France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the UK, and the US were selected as permanent members of the Security Council.
The UN officially came into existence on 24 October 1945 upon ratification of the United Nations Charter by the five then-permanent members of the Security Council and by a majority of the other 46 signatories. On 17 January 1946, the Security Council met for the first time at Church House, Westminster, in London, United Kingdom.
UNSC Full Form Roles and Responsibilities
The main purpose of the Security Council was to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. Article 24 of the UN Charter states that The Security Council has the primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. In fact, the Security Council is the only organ on the global level that has the right to adopt legally binding resolutions in attempts to maintain international peace and security. If necessary, it can, for example, authorize the use of sanctions or use force to maintain stability and peace.
UNSC Full Form Membership
The Security Council consists of 15 members—five permanent members (the Republic of China [Taiwan], France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and ten nonpermanent members elected by the UN General Assembly for two-year terms. The Security Council’s five permanent members have the power to veto any substantive resolution; this allows a permanent member to block the adoption of a resolution, but not to prevent or end debate. Along with the five permanent members, the Security Council of the United Nations has temporary members that hold their seats on a rotating basis by geographic region.
India And UNSC
India has actively sought a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), despite facing challenges in securing a permanent membership status. Despite being a country with a substantial population, a robust economy, and possessing nuclear capabilities, India has yet to achieve this status. As a member of the G4 countries, including India, Germany, Japan, and Brazil, India has positioned itself for potential permanent membership in the UNSC. Several key assertions support India’s claim:
- Fastest-Growing Economy: India’s rapid economic growth positions it as one of the fastest-growing economies globally.
- Nuclear Weapons State: India’s recent attainment of nuclear weapons status strengthens its strategic standing on the international stage.
- Population and Democracy: India boasts the second-largest population globally and stands as the world’s largest liberal democracy.
- Purchasing Power Parity: The country holds a high ranking in terms of purchasing power parity, emphasizing its economic influence.
- UN Peacekeeping Contributions: India has made significant contributions to UN Peacekeeping Missions, underscoring its commitment to global peace and security.
However, achieving permanent UNSC membership for India requires more than just meeting minimum voting requirements. It entails building diplomatic relations and garnering support from a majority of UN member countries. India’s pursuit of a permanent seat reflects its aspiration to play a greater role in shaping global decisions and contributing to international peace and security.
