Bhanu Athaiya was the first Indian to win an Academy Award for designing the costumes (55th Academy Awards). She was the only woman member of the Bombay Progressive Artists’ Group, group of modern artists based in Bombay. She won an Academy Award for “Best Costume Design” for her work in the movie Gandhi (1982).
