Struts and Column
The structural member which is subjected to axial compressive load is called strut.
The structure which is vertical and subjected to axial compressive load is called column
Buckling Failure
This failure is given by Euler’s and called Euler’s theory.
Euler’s theory is applicable for the long columns, and in this theory, the effect of crushing is neglected.
Let P_e= Buckling Load
E=Modulus of elasticity
I=Moment of inertia about the centroidal axis
l_e=Effective length
Effective Length for the various end condition
END CONDITION | EFFECTIVE LENGTH |
Both End Hinged | L |
One Hinged and One Fixed | L/√2 |
Both Ends Fixed | L/2 |
One End Fixed and One End Free | 2L |
