Torsion

Torsion means, twisting of a shaft when a couple or torque is applied on it about longitudinal axis

Equation of Torsion

T/J=τ/r=Gθ/L
Where
T=Torque applied
J=Polar Moment of Inertia
τ=Shear stress
G=Shear Modulus
θ=Angle of twist in radian
L=length of shaft
Note: Angle of twist is maximum at the free end of the shaft
Shear stress is zero at the centre and maximum at the extreme fibre of the shaft
