Engineers Day 2024 Significance

Every year Engineers Day is celebrated on the 15 September to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visveshvaraya. He was the first Civil Engineer in India and contributed many important things to the field of Engineering. It is also known as Civil Engineering Day 2024. By observing his contribution and dedication Government of India awarded him with the prestigious award ‘Bharat Ratna’. Engineers Day is the inspiration for all Engineers to follow Sir M Visveshvaraya’s principles and work for the development and growth of the country using their knowledge and skills.

Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 and earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) from the University of Mysore before transferring to one of Asia’s oldest engineering institutes, the College of Science in Pune. Visvesvaraya began his career with the Government of Bombay’s Public Works Department. Many difficult projects were completed under his supervision, including a unique irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir in Pune and the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore.

As per the UNESCO 40th General Conference in 2019, World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development is celebrated worldwide on the 4th March of each year since 2020 as a day for engineers and engineers. Every year on September 15th, Visvesvaraya Jayanti is commemorated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, one of India’s greatest engineers. In his honor, September 15 is also recognized as National Engineers Day in the United States. Sir MV was conferred the title of Knight Commander of the British Indian Empire (KCIE) by King George V for his contributions to the development of the country. He was also awarded the Bharat Ratna by independent India in 1955. His most well-known achievement was the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysuru, on which he served as chief engineer. The Engineers Day 2022 Celebration was organized by the Institution of Engineers India, Kolhapur Local Centre at Shahu Smarak Bhavan yesterday evening. The theme of the program was “Smart Engineering for a Better World.”

Engineers Day 2021 was celebrated under the theme “Engineering for A Healthy Planet – Celebrating the UNESCO Engineering Report.” The theme was decided to shape the world with the latest emerging technologies and to face the challenges against the planet.
