ISRO Headquarters

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) was established in 1969 with the goal of creating a national space program. Its main office or we can say ISRO Headquarters is in Bangalore (Bengaluru). The chairman of ISRO also serves as the secretary of the Department of Space and as head of the Indian government’s Space Commission. Using a nationwide network of centers, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) conducts its operations.

When ISRO was Established?

ISRO was previously the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), set up by the Government of India in 1962, as envisioned by Dr. Vikram Sarabhai. The History of ISRO is given below:

  • Under Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the father of the Indian space program, space research operations was started in India in the 1960s.
  • Since its start, the Indian space program has consisted of three different components: application programs, space transportation systems, and satellites for remote sensing and communication.
  • Under the direction of Drs. Sarabhai and Ramanathan, INCOSPAR (the Indian National Committee for Space Research) was established.
  • The Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE) was run in 1975–1976. It was hailed as “the world’s largest sociological experiment.” The “Kheda Communications Project (KCP)” followed, serving as a field laboratory for the transmission of need-based and location-specific programs throughout Gujarat State.
  • The first Indian spacecraft, called “Aryabhata,” was created and launched during this time.
  • Bhaskara-I and Bhaskara-II missions were pioneering efforts in the field of remote sensing during the 1980s, while ‘Ariane Passenger Payload Experiment (APPLE)’ became the prototype for a future communication satellite system.
  • Major space infrastructure was built during the operating phase in the 1990s under two broad categories: one for the Indian Remote Sensing Satellite (IRS) system and the other for the multipurpose Indian National Satellite (INSAT) system. Significant accomplishments during this phase included the creation and operationalization of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
