Is SSC JE tougher than GATE ?

Staff Selection Commission Junior Engineer exam (SSC JE ) and Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are often compared to each other . Both these exams offer an opportunity for technical graduates to secure their future after engineering/diploma. However these two exams are starkly different in terms of difficulty level, eligibility, nature of the job and competition prevailing for these exams. While it’s a very opinionated comparison , the difficulties level can be compared on the basis of given points.

SSC JE VS GATE- Difficulty level Comparison

  • The question paper of GATE is designed by the faculties at IIT or IISC . The question paper of SSC JE is designed by the Staff Selection Commission body.
  • The difficulty level in the GATE exam is moderate every year with little modifications and surprises for the candidates, SSC prepares an easy to moderate paper which can be cracked with good dedication and hard work.
  • Even though IIT makes GATE paper but they make sure in mind to keep the examination level standard. The difficulty level is no way comparable with the IIT JEE paper set by the faculties of IIT.
  • Some say that cracking SSC JE is more difficult for them because they had to recall a lot of formula and even study subjects like GK to score well in the examination, while for others, grasping the conceptual questions make it harder for them to crack the GATE exam.
  • The SSC JE exam is combination of engineering, general awareness and reasoning subjects. It’s not very conceptual. The GATE exam requires conceptual clarity and consists of Numerical-based questions.
  • The Relevant discipline paper in SSC JE exam carries the similar difficulty level whereas the GATE exam level varies by subject, with Mechanical Engineering being moderate to tough, Computer Science Engineering being easy to Moderate and Mathematics being moderately difficult.

SSC JE AND GATE-Exam pattern

The SSC JE exam has two papers , paper I and paper II . The exam pattern of both the papers are discussed below-

  1. Paper I- The paper is an objective -type CBT with 200 questions, each worth 1 marks . It has three sections : General intelligence and Reasoning (50 marks), General Awareness ( 50 marks ) and Technical Section (100) marks. The technical section covers Civil Engineering , Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. The duration of the exam is 2 hours.
  2. Paper II- This paper is a descriptive paper . Candidate can choose a subject from their chosen engineering discipline.

The GATE exam has 30 papers. The GATE exam consists of 65 questions of 100 marks.

  1. General Aptitude (GA)- 15 marks, 10 questions. It is asked from aptitude sections
  2. Subject- Specific Section- 85 marks, 55 questions. It’s asked from the relevant discipline.
