In India, a Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) refers to a government-owned company. These companies are supported by the central government of India, a state government, or both. Navratna PSUs: The Department of Public Enterprises grants Navratna status to organizations. To qualify for this status, a company must score at least 60 out of 100 based on six criteria. These criteria include the net profit of total assets, the cost of labor compared to the total production or service costs, profit before depreciation, interest, and taxes about capital used, profit before depreciation, interest, and taxes compared to turnover, earnings per share, and performance across sectors. Additionally, the company must first be a Miniratna and have at least four independent directors on its board before it can become a Navratna.

Navratna status gives companies greater financial and operational independence, allowing them to invest up to Rs. 1000 crores or 15% of their total assets in a single project without needing government approval. In a year, these companies can spend up to 30% of their total assets, as long as it doesn’t exceed Rs. 1000 crores. They also have the freedom to enter joint ventures, form partnerships, and establish subsidiaries abroad.
