  • This finding could offer crucial insights into the extinction of megafauna in the Indian subcontinent.

About Megafauna:

  • The term “megafauna” is used to describe animals weighing more than 50 kg.
  • Origin: First used by English naturalist and explorer Alfred Russel Wallace in his 1876 book, The Geographical Distribution of Animals.
  • Classification by Diet:
    • Megaherbivores: Plant-eaters
    • Megacarnivores: Meat-eaters
    • Megaomnivores: Eat both plants and meat

Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT Why in the news?

  • The India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT is set to take place from 3rd to 16th July 2024 in Umroi, Meghalaya.

About Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT:

  • Participating Battalion: SIKKIM SCOUTS, representing the Indian contingent.
  • Indian Personnel: 45 personnel from SIKKIM SCOUTS, along with other arms and services.
  • Frequency: Annual training event.
  • Location: Conducted alternately in India and Mongolia.
  • Last edition: Mongolia, July 2023.
  • Aim: Enhance joint military capability for counter-insurgency operations in sub-conventional scenarios under Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate.

    • Aimed at observing and understanding the solar atmosphere, solar magnetic storms, and their impact on the Earth’s climate.

    • Scheduled for launch by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
    • To be placed in a halo orbit around the Lagrange point 1 (L1) of the Sun-Earth system, approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth.

  • India successfully test-fired its first indigenous anti-radiation missile, the Rudram-1, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Chandaka wildlife sanctuary Context:

  • Forest officials are planning to relocate 72 sambar and spotted deer from Taptapani deer park to Chandaka wildlife sanctuary in Bhubaneswar.

Key points:

  • Chandaka-Dampara forest, near Bhubaneswar, is situated at the northeastern edge of the Eastern Ghats.
  • Historically, the area was rich in biodiversity, hosting tigers, leopards, Sambar deer, Barking deer, Chital, Wild Boar, and Gaur.
  • By the 1960s, tiger populations declined sharply, leading to the last tiger being placed in captivity in 1967 at Nandankanan Zoo.
  • In 1982, the state government declared Chandaka-Dampara forest a wildlife sanctuary to protect its ecosystem and provide a safe haven for elephants.
  • This sanctuary status marked a critical step in conserving the region’s biodiversity and restoring the forest ecosystem.
Odisha CM Launches Rs 200 Crore Initiative to Combat Urban Floods  Context:

  • Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced a Rs 200 crore initiative with IIT Delhi’s support for urban flood management.

  • The Odisha government has established a 22-member committee tasked with advancing medical education in Odia within the state.

  • The committee’s primary objective is to evaluate the feasibility of translating essential MBBS course materials into Odia.
  • Additionally, the committee will assess the scope of work involved in this translation initiative and establish a timeline for its completion. Financial considerations will also be addressed, as the committee plans to outline the budget required for executing this project.
