Groundwater to get averagely 2.1 Deg C warmer by end of this Century: Study Context:

  • A recent global study has revealed that under a medium emissions scenario, groundwater at the depth of the water table excluding permafrost regions is likely to warm by an average of 2.1°C by the end of the 21st century.

Key points:

Importance of Aquifers:

  • Aquifers hold the largest reserve of unfrozen freshwater, crucial for supporting life on Earth.
  • Despite their importance, there is limited understanding of how groundwater responds to surface warming across different spatial and temporal dimensions.

Impact on Ecosystems and Human Population:

  • Higher groundwater temperatures have wide-ranging impacts, affecting geothermal potential, groundwater-dependent ecosystems, stream thermal regimes, aquatic biogeochemical processes, and groundwater quality.
  • Projections suggest that millions of people may live in areas where groundwater temperatures exceed safe drinking water thresholds.

Factors Influencing Groundwater Temperature:

  • The warming of groundwater is attributed to the overall radiative imbalance caused by increased concentrations of greenhouse gases.
  • While oceans absorb much of this heat, terrestrial subsurface and groundwater also absorb significant amounts.

Thermal Regulation in Subsurface Environments:

  • Subsurface temperatures are mainly regulated by one-dimensional (vertical) diffusive heat transport, with minor contributions from water flow-induced heat advection.
  • At larger spatial scales, these effects are smoothed out or averaged, affecting groundwater temperature distributions.
Sambalpuri Bandha Context:
