  • The United Nations’ Global Stocktake report serves as a blueprint for discussions during the Conference of Parties and aims to assess countries’ progress in curbing greenhouse gas emissions since 2015. 
Centre plans new indicators to rank states for good governance Context

The Union government’s Department of Administration Reforms and Public Grievances is planning to come out with new indicators for good governance to gauge the performance of states and union territories

Key points

  • The opinion of the state is being sought on indicators in seven areas. 
  • Indicators in these areas have been proposed by other states and union territories  
  • The index, a uniform tool to assess the status of governance and the impact of various interventions taken up by state governments and union territories, took up 50 indicators before deciding on the rankings for the state in 10 sectors.
List of gift hampers given to G20 representatives of countries Context

For the G20 Leaders’ two-day summit, held under India’s presidency, Heads of States & Leaders representing their countries, got special gift hampers.

Special Session to discuss Parliament’s 75-year journey, take up Bills on CEC, the Press Context

Ending the suspense on the agenda of the Special Session of Parliament the two Houses will begin discussion on Parliament’s 75-year journey on the first day.

Key points

  • There will be a discussion on “Parliamentary journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha — achievements, experiences, memories and learnings”.
  • The agenda indicates a plan to shift to the new Parliament building. 
  • Three Bills will be taken up: 
  1. the Post Office Bill, 2023 to “consolidate and amend the law relating to Post Office in India”;
  2. the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, to “regulate the appointment, conditions of service and term of office of the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners”; and
  3.  the Repealing and Amending Bill, 2023 to “repeal certain enactments and to amend an enactment”.
  • In addition to these, the Lok Sabha will take up the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023, and the Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023.
We do not recognise buffer zones in Manipur, says Meitei women’s group Context

Leaders of the Meira Paibi, a Meitei women’s collective in Manipur, do not recognise the legitimacy of buffer zones in the State, created by the Union and Manipur governments separating the Kuki-Zo population in the hills from the Meitei community in the valley.

About Meitei community

  • The Meitei people, also known as the Manipuri people, are the predominant ethnic group of Manipur State.
  • They speak the Meitei language (officially called Manipuri), one of the 22 official languages of India and the sole official language of Manipur State.
  • The Meiteis primarily settled in the Imphal Valley region in modern-day Manipur, though a sizable population has settled in the other Indian states of Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. 
  • There is also a notable presence of Meitei in the neighbouring countries of Myanmar and Bangladesh. 
  • The Meitei ethnic group represents about 53% of Manipur’s population.
  • They are divided into clans, the members of which do not intermarry.
  • Rice cultivation on irrigated fields is the basis of their economy. 
  • A majority follow Hinduism, while more than 8% are Muslims.
Kuki Tribe Key points:

  • It is one of the ethnic groups that inhabit the northeastern regions of India, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
  • They are mainly found in the states of Manipur and Mizoram in India, Chin State in Myanmar, and Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh.
  • They are also known as Chin or Mizo people, and they share a common ancestry and culture.
  • They are part of the larger Zo people, along with the Chin and Mizo tribes.
  • The Kuki tribe has a rich and diverse history, culture and tradition that reflect their adaptation to the hilly and forested terrain they live in.
  • They speak various dialects of the Chin-Kuki-Mizo language family, which belong to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan languages.
Hindi Diwas: Sept 14 Key points:

  • September 14 is celebrated in India as Hindi Diwas. 
  • The Eighth Schedule of the Constitution lists 22 languages, which includes Hindi. A quiz on these languages.
  • Hindi is written in the Devanagari script.

5 deaths in one Odisha district, 3 more Scrub Typhus cases detected Context

As many as five people have reportedly succumbed to the deadly Scrub Typhus disease in Odisha

Key points

  • Caused by bites of larval mites (chiggers), Scrub Typhus is a zoonotic disease. Orientia tsutsugamushi is a gram negative bacteria that causes this infection in humans. 
  • The bacteria from the mite carried on from animals like rodents enter the bloodstream and slowly spreads all over the body.
  • The most common symptoms of this disease include fever, headache, body ache and scrabs or lesions at the place of bite. 
  • The vector mites usually come in contact with humans in forested areas, grasslands, farmlands where people engage in their work. 
  • Scrub Typhus like many other bacterial diseases can be diagnosed in the laboratory with serology and PCR tests. No vaccine exists for this disease.

Ministry of railway sanctions final location survey for new line between Japur-Keonjhar road-Dhamra port Context

The Ministry of Railways has given its nod for the final location survey (FLS) of a new railway line connecting Jajpur Keonjhar Road and Dhamra Port in Bhadrak district.

  • This 96-kilometer stretch is set to enhance connectivity and open up new possibilities for the region.
  • The ministry has allocated Rs 2.4 crore to facilitate the survey process. 
  • The newly proposed railway line will traverse through important religious and tourist destinations, including the revered Akhandalamani temple at Aradi Pitha and Navigaya at Birajakhetra, as well as the town of Jajpur, the district headquarters.
