UNSC Why in news?

  • The Security Council held an emergency session on Friday after Israeli strikes on Beirut and southern Lebanon.

Key Points:

  • It is one of the five principal organizations of the United Nations (UN).
  • It has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security.
  • Members: It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote.
    • 5 permanent members known as P5, including the United Kingdom, China, France, Russia, and the United States.
    • 10 non-permanent members: Each year the 193-member General Assembly elects five non-permanent members for a two-year term at the UNSC.
  • The Security Council has permanent headquarters at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City.

  • The Indian Navy hosted the fifth edition of the Goa Maritime Symposium (GMS-24) at the Naval War College.

Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project Why in news?

  • The Rajasthan Chief Minister discussed completing the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project together with Madhya Pradesh.

  • The Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP), announced in the 2017-18 state budget, aims to provide a permanent solution for drinking and irrigation water in 13 districts of eastern Rajasthan.
  • The districts included Jhalawar, Baran, Kota Bundi, Sawai Madhopur, Ajmer, Tok, Jaipur, Dausa, Karauli, Alwar, Bharatpur and Dholpur.
  • The modified PKC-ERCP (Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal) Project MoU was signed between Centre, Rajasthan and MP.

Places in news: Nagzira Navegoan Tiger Reserve Why in news?

  • The Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve (NNTR), located in Bhandara and Gondia districts, has lost its dominant male tiger, T9.

  • Location: It is situated in Gondia and Shandara Districts of Maharashtra.
  • It comprises Navegaon National Park, Navegaon Wildlife Sanctuary, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, New Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary and Koka Wildlife Sanctuary.

Chhatua to be tested on 23rd of every month Context:

  • The Odisha government has announced that the Chhatua initiative will be tested on the 23rd of every month. 

About:

  • Chhatua is a fortified food supplement made from locally available ingredients like rice, pulses, and jaggery
  • It aims to provide nutritional supplements to pregnant women and children,
  • The initiative is part of the state’s efforts to improve maternal and child health outcomes.
No Confidence motion  Context:

  • At Least 10 counselors brought a no-confidence motion was brought against the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chairperson of the Nilagiri NAC (Notified Area Council) in Odisha. 
  • The motion, filed by a group of councilors, alleged dissatisfaction with the chairperson’s performance and leadership.

Odisha To Host State’s Flagship Global Investors’ Summit ‘Utkarsh Odisha’ Context:

    • The state of Odisha is set to host its flagship global investors’ summit, “Utkarsh Odisha,” in January 2025.
    • It is the renamed version of ‘Make in Odisha Conclave’.
    • This event aims to attract significant investments from domestic and international investors, showcasing the state’s potential for growth and development.
  • Theme: ‘Odisha will be the growth engine of the development journey of the country in the next 25 years’.

Odisha Govt To Extend Maternity & Paternity Leave For Parenthood By Surrogacy Context:

  • Odisha government has taken a progressive step by extending maternity and paternity leave benefits to its employees who become parents through surrogacy. 
  • This move aligns with the growing recognition of the diverse paths to parenthood and aims to provide equitable support to all families.   

Key points of the policy:

  • Maternity leave: Female employees who become surrogate or commissioning mothers are eligible for 180 days of maternity leave.   
  • Paternity leave: Male employees who become commissioning fathers are entitled to 15 days of paternity leave within six months of the child’s birth.
