Sangeeta Singh, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer from the 1986 batch, has been appointed as Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), with effect from May 02, 2022.

The Union Finance Ministry has issued an order stating that Sangeeta Singh will perform the duties and responsibilities of Chairperson, CBDT, in addition to her own duties, for a period of three months or until a regular chairman is chosen, whichever comes earlier.

She was appointed after the incumbent chairman of the direct tax administration body, Jagannath Bidyadhar Mohapatra retired on April 30, 2022.

Singh is currently in charge of Audits and Judicial matters. She is also holding additional charge of Income Tax and Revenue and Tax Payers services.

Under the Scheme the residents of Chhattisgarh can avail around 100 public services at their doorstep.

Once the concerned department issues the certificate, it will then be delivered at the citizen’s doorstep by the ‘Mitaan’ in a sealed envelope within the prescribed time limit.

The Punjab School Education Board has banned three history books for allegedly distorting facts related to Sikh history.

The books which have been banned are ‘Modern ABC of history of Punjab’, written by Manjit Singh Sodhi, ‘History of Punjab’, written by Mahinderpal Kaur and ‘History of Punjab’ by M S Mann, for Class 12.

These books have been published by three different Jalandhar-based publishers.

Many organisations had earlier held protests outside the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) office, demanding that these history books be banned for distorting facts related to Sikh history.

Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank is offering this newly launched credit scheme that has been named Jivhala. This credit scheme is a first-of-its-kind scheme that has been launched for prisoners in India.

The pilot for this scheme was launched for the prisoners who are in the Yerawada Central Jail, Pune. This scheme will be implemented in around sixty prisons in Maharashtra.

In the initial phase of this scheme, a Rs 50,000 loan will be given. The interest rate that will be applicable is 7%. Out of the interest that will be earned by the bank, 1 percent will be contributed by the bank to the prisoners’ welfare fund. For issuing this loan no guarantor or mortgage is required.

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) conducted a 25-day special campaign ‘Operation Vigilance’ last month to stop smuggling from trains. Under this campaign, the RPF achieved great success.

Operation Vigilant was launched by the IPF between April 5 and April 30, 2022. In this 26 cases of illegal tobacco products being transported by train were detected, in which products worth more than Rs 44 lakh were seized and 14 people were arrested. In 177 cases of illicit liquor, 97 persons were arrested and about Rs 18 lakh illicit liquor was seized.

Criminals carry weapons by trains. As a part of ‘Operation Vigilant’ an intensive search operation was carried out in stations, trains and railway area in which RPF apprehended 17 persons and recovered one AK 47 rifle, one pipe gun, one double barrel gun, one pistol, 6 country-made pistols, 3 daggers., 10 pieces of 12 bore ammunition, 140 pieces were recovered. Along with this, .315 cartridges, 404 bullets of 7.62 mm and other types of explosives have been recovered.
