The Government of India enacted the law against Triple Talaq on August 01, 2019 to make the social malpractice of Triple Talaq a criminal offense.

The law is formally called the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019.

The 3rd edition of Ex AL NAJAH IV was held at Muscat from 12 to 25 March 2019.

The Indian Army will be represented by troops from the 18 Mechanised Infantry Battalion at the AL NAJAH-IV.

The Royal Army of Oman contingent will be represented by the Sultan of Oman Parachute Regiment.

Sol.  India’s Sanket Sargar has scripted history, by becoming the first athlete from India to win a medal at Commonwealth Games 2022.

He won a silver medal in the men’s 55kg event with a total of 248kg (113kg in snatch, 135 in clean and jerk) to finish behind Malaysia’s Aniq Mohamad, who took gold with a total of 249 kg (107kg in snatch, 142kg in clean and jerk).

Maharashtra’s Sanket Sargar, who took up wrestling when he was 13-year-old, has been finishing on the podium at major international events, including the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 in Tashkent, helps his father, who owns a pan shop and a food stall in Sangli, Maharashtra.

Sanket Sagar, who set a new Commonwealth and national record at the Asian qualifiers in Singapore in February 2022 (snatch – 113kg; clean and jerk 143kg – total of 256kg), was at his best as he cleared all his 3 weights in his first attempt in snatch.

Sol. Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won India’s first gold at the ongoing Commonwealth Games after she brought home the laurel in women’s 49kg weightlifting final.

The 27-year-old lifted a total of 201kg to win the yellow metal and this was India’s third medal of Day 2 of the ongoing event after Sanket Sargar (silver) and Gururaja (bronze) delivered earlier in the day.

Chanu, who had won the gold medal at the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast in Australia, was miles ahead of the competition as she picked up 88kg in snatch and 113 kg in clean and jerk.

Sol.  India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga has won gold medal in men’s 67kg category weightlifting at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The 19-year-old Youth Olympic champion lifted a total of 300kg (140kg+160kg) to get the first position.

This is the second gold for the country and fifth medal overall.

Samoan weightlifter Vaipava Nevo Ioane secured silver medal with a lift of 293 (127kg + 166kg)

Sol.  20-year-old Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuli has won the gold medal in the men’s 73kg category by lifting a total of 313kg (143kg 170kg).

Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad performed his best effort of 303kg (138kg 165kg) to claim silver.

Sol.  Tamil Nadu government has issued an order to implement the first phase of the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme at 1,545 government primary schools for the benefit of over 14 lakh children in Classes I-V during 2022-23.

The cost would be 33.56 crores. Breakfast consisting of a meal with sambar and vegetables will be provided to children in all working schools.

Every student is to be provided a 150-500 gram breakfast with sambar with vegetables. On two days, the breakfast will be made of millets.

The online taxi hiring service will serve as an alternative to popular corporate online cab services.

The fortune of Yang Huiyan, owner of China’s largest real estate developer ‘Country Garden Holdings’, dropped by more than half in 2022, from $24 billion to $11 billion. She had been Asia’s richest women for the past five years.

Falguni Nayar of Nykaa overtook Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw of Biocon to become the richest self-made woman in India with a wealth of ₹57,520 crore.

Mauritius, The Netherlands and Switzerland follow the top two nations with contributions standing at 15.98 percent, 7.86 percent and 7.31 percent respectively.

While among the states, Karnataka led the pack in with a share of 55 percent of the total FDI inflow in FY22, followed by neighbouring state Maharashtra at 26.26 percent and national capital Delhi at 13.93 percent.

India has improved one position to 7th rank among the top 20 host economies for 2021, as per the UNCTAD World Investment Report 2022.

FDI equity inflow in manufacturing sectors has risen by 76% in FY 22 at USD 21.34 billion as compared with the previous fiscal at USD 12.09 billion.

Sol.  WWF has launched the “Good for you, Good for the planet” campaign to guide people towards eating a planet friendly diet.

A new study by WWF and Tesco revealed that food waste amounts to 10 per cent of GHG, a jump from previous estimates of eight per cent.

The report said 2 billion tones of food was left wasted on farms and additionally, 931 million tonnes was left wasted in retail and consumption too.

Overall, 2.5 billion tonnes of food goes uneaten globally. The report said approximately 40 per cent of all food grows uneaten worldwide, up from the previous estimated figure of 33 per cent.

For handling other post-transaction activities, acquiring banks can continue to store CoF data until January 31, 2023.

The STF has been tasked to monitor and provide guidance to the government on the expansion of diagnostic facilities and to explore vaccination for the infection in the country.

Pacific Dragon is basically a trilateral ballistic missile defense (BMD) tracking event between the U.S. Navy, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force and Republic of Korea Navy.

However, apart from the three countries, Canada and Australia is also taking part in the multilateral drill in 2022, which is being led by the US Pacific Fleet.

The Pacific Dragon exercise aims to improve interoperability and tactical and technical coordination among participants in detecting, tracking, reporting and assessing ballistic targets. It also aims to enhance the readiness against escalating threats from North Korea.

Sol.  India will be part of the mega air combat exercise “Pitch Black 2022” among 17-nations, to be held in the Northern Territory of Australia.

The three-week-long military exercise Pitch Black is scheduled to take place from August 19 to September 6, 2022.

Over 100 aircraft and 2,500 military personnel from 17 nations will be part of the drill.

The exercise is being conducted after a gap of four-years due to Covid. The last edition was held in 2018.

The participating countries include the US, India, Australia, Japan, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Netherlands, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, the UAE and the UK.

Ex Pitch Black is a biennial multi-national large force employment warfare exercise, hosted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

The objectives for the exercise is to foster closer relationship between the participating forces and promote interoperability through exchange of knowledge and experience.

Sol. The Indian Navy’s guided-missile frigate INS Tarkash (while on her long-range overseas deployment) has conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) with French naval ships in the North Atlantic Ocean.

Replenishment at sea was exercised between Tarkash and the French Fleet Tanker FNS Somme.

This was followed by joint air operations with the maritime surveillance aircraft Falcon 50 participating in multiple simulated missile engagements and air defence drills.

Sol.  GST collection has risen 28 percent to touch the second-highest level of Rs 1.49 lakh crore in July on the back of economic recovery and steps taken to curb tax evasion.

GST, introduced in July 2017, touched a record high of Rs 1.68 lakh crore in April 2022.

Sol. The Indian Air Force will retire one of its four remaining squadrons, MiG-21 (Russian combat aircraft) fighter jets by 2022 September and other three scheduled to be phased out by 2025.

The old MiG-21s will be replaced with newer fighter jets.

Six MiG-21s have been lost in crashes in the last 20 months, killing five pilots.

The MiG-21s were supposed to be retired a long time ago but delays in induction of the LCA Tejas aircraft have forced the IAF to continue flying these planes.

The air force received its first single-engine MiG-21 in 1963.

The fighter jet has been participated in many operations like Safed Sagar (Kargil, 1999), operation of India in Pakistan in February 2019.

Sol.  August 02, 2022 marks the 146th birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the designer of India’s national flag.

To mark the birth anniversary of Pingali Venkayya, the Government of India will release a special commemorative postage stamp in his honor for his invaluable contribution to the country.

The stamp will be released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an event “Tiranga Utsav” organised by the Ministry of Culture at Indira Gandhi Stadium, in New Delhi, on the occasion of his 146th Birth Anniversary.

The event will also display the original design of the national flag made by Pingali Venkayya. The current flag is the modified version of the first design of the flag.

The Tiranga Utsav will also witness the grand launch of the “Har Ghar Tiranga” anthem and video.

Venkayya, born on August 02, 1876, near Machilipatnam town in Andhra Pradesh, was a freedom fighter and a follower of Gandhian principles.

Sol.  Sujoy Lal Thaosen, the Director General (DG) of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), has been given the additional charge as DG Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), with effect from August 01, 2022.

Thaosen has taken the charge from former ITBP DG Sanjay Arora who has now been appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner.

Thaosen is a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the Madhya Pradesh cadre.

 

S64. Ans. (2) Textiles Ministry

Sol. ‘The Crafts Village scheme’ aims to develop handicrafts as a sustainable livelihood option for artisans in the clusters.

It is an initiative of Union Textiles Ministry for ‘Linking Textile with Tourism’.

It aims to promote craft and tourism by providing infrastructure support to handicraft clusters.

Eight craft villages are selected under the scheme. They are Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh), Vadaj (Gujarat), Naini (Uttar Pradesh), Raghurajpur (Odisha), Anegundi (Karnataka), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Taj Ganj (Uttar Pradesh) and Amer (Rajasthan).

Sol. Chile has democratically drafted a constitution for the first time in Chile’s history.

The proposed text was written by a 154-member body elected through a popular vote.

The current 1980 constitution that focuses on private rights and free market principles was written during the Augusto Pinochet military dictatorship.

Some of the new features include proposals including the president could be re-elected consecutively once, an entire article for environment stating that ‘nature has rights’ and that animals are ‘subjects of special protection’.

Sol.  AlphaFold is an Artificial Intelligence tool developed by Alphabet-owned AI research company DeepMind Technologies.

The tool has predicted and published the structures of over 200 million protein structures in collaboration with the European Bioinformatics Institute.

This is considered as the most influential database for biological research.

Sol.  A new book titled “Lion of the Skies: Hardit Singh Malik, the Royal Air Force and the First World War” is all about an “India’s first fighter pilot” who participated in the World War, long before the Indian Air Force was born.

The book has been written by author Stephen Barker, who describes in great detail, how challenging it was for an Indian to serve in the British armed forces, fighting racial discrimination – both institutional and interpersonal.

During the First World War, Hardit Singh Malik served as fighter pilot for both Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and the Royal Air Force (RAF) for fighting Germans.

He is also the first Indian Ambassador to France.

 

S68. Ans.  (1) Ellen Prager

Sol. Marine biologist Ellen Prager has come out with a book titled “Dangerous Earth: What we wish we knew about volcanoes, hurricanes, climate change, earthquakes and more”.

In the book, the author seeks to respond to the most compelling question: Why can’t we better predict the natural disasters?

However, Prager has also concluded that preparation and not prediction of natural events, holds the key to prepare for what lies ahead.

DGCA ((Directorate General of Civil Aviation) allows pilots to fly till the age of 65 years, compared to Air India retirement age of 58 years.

Sol. On 6th August, Hiroshima Day is observed every year to spread awareness of the horrific effects of the atom bomb blasts and to promote peace politics.

On this day in 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, a Japanese city during World War II. The atomic blast was massive and destroyed 90 per cent of the city and killed thousands of people. It killed almost 20,000 soldiers, and 70,000 to 126,000 civilians. Three days later, another city in Japan, Nagasaki was bombed leading to the death of 80,000 people. This was the first time that a nuclear bomb was used in a war other than testing. Since then, no atom bombs or nuclear bombs were used in any war. Hiroshima Day 2022 marks the 77th anniversary of the killings.

Sol. Indian para powerlifter Sudhir has won gold medal for India in the men’s heavyweight final at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Sudhir lifted a total weight of 212kg.

He also created a new games record with his final score of 134.5 points.

This is India’s first ever Gold medal in Para-Powerlifting sports at the Commonwealth Games.

 

S73. Ans. (1) Rajiv Gauba

Sol. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved an extension in service of Rajiv Gauba as Cabinet Secretary of India for a further period of one-year, beyond, August 30, 2022.

This is his second extension as Cabinet Secretary.

Mr Rajiv Gauba is a 1982-batch IAS officer of Jharkhand cadre.

He was appointed to the country’s top bureaucratic post in 2019 for two years.

Then in August 2021, he was given first one year extension.

Prior to being appointed on this post, Mr Gauba has also served as the secretary in the Union Urban Development Ministry, Additional Secretary in the Home Ministry.

Sol.  An astronomical observatory in India, which is 106-year-old, has been included on the UNESCO list of important endangered heritage observatories of the world.

The astronomical observatory is located at Langat Singh College, in Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

This observatory was the first of its kind in eastern India. It was established in the college in 1916 to impart astronomical knowledge to the students in detail.

Langat Singh College was set up in 1899. It is affiliated to Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bihar University, (BRABU).

Sol. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of various projects of the Shrimad Rajchandra Mission worth more than 300 crores at Dharampur in Gujarat on August 5, 2022.

He has inaugurated Shrimad Rajchandra Hospital at Dharampur in Valsad district, Gujarat. The entire project costs around 200 crore rupees. It is a 250-bed multispecialty hospital.

He has laid the foundation stone of Shrimad Rajchandra Animal Hospital.

He has laid the foundation stone of the Shrimad Rajchandra Center of Excellence for Women. It will employ over 700 tribal women. It will provide a livelihood to thousands of others.

Shrimad Rajchandra Mission Dharampur is a spiritual movement for inner transformation. It was founded by Gurudevshri Rakeshji. It works through 196 centres in five continents.

Sol.  In Nepal, the general elections will be held in a single phase on November 20, 2022.

The decision to this effect was taken in a Cabinet meeting which was chaired by the Prime Minister of Nepal Sher Bahadur Deuba.

There are a total of 275 seats in the House of Representatives, out of which 165 members are directly elected, while the remaining 110 are elected through proportional representation.

Sol.  Noted Indian actor Mithilesh Chaturvedi, who has featured in several TV shows and films has passed away due to cardiac arrest. He was 67.

The veteran actor was best known for playing small yet strong supporting roles in multiple films.

Some of his famous films are ‘Satya’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’, ‘Asoka’, ‘Gadar Ek Prem Katha’ and ‘Aks’.

His last TV show was ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’.

Sol. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting held on August 05, 2022 has decided to:

Increase the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) by 50 basis points to 40 percent with immediate effect. Earlier this was 4.90 percent.

Consequently the various rates are as under:

Policy Repo Rate : 5.40%

Standing Deposit Facility (SDF)= 5.15%

Marginal Standing Facility Rate : 5.65%

Bank Rate : 5.65%

CRR : 4.50%

SLR : 18.00%

The MPC decided to continue with the accommodative stance.

The real GDP growth projection has been retained at 2 percent for FY2022-23.

Sol. Reserve Bank of India has announced Digital Payments Index (DPI) for March 2022 at 30 as against 304.06 for September 2021.

RBI has introduced Digital Payments Index in January 2021 with March 2018 as the base year to capture the extent of digitisation of payments across the country. This means that the DPI score for March 2018 is set at 100.

RBI has started publishing the Digital Payments Index (DPI) on a semi-annual basis from March 2021 onwards with a lag of 4 months. This means that the DPI will be released by RBI for March and September every year in the months of July and January respectively.

Sol. Ministry of Culture has released the third Comic book on stories of 20 Tribal Freedom Fighters on at Tiranga Utsav celebration in New Delhi.

Ministry of Culture as a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKM) has released pictorial books on 75 freedom fighters in collaboration with Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) to create awareness among the youth and children about the supreme sacrifice and patriotism of our lesser-known heroes of freedom struggle.

The first ACK Comic book on India’s 20 Women Unsung Heroes.

The Second Comic book on stories of 15 Women elected to the Constituent Assembly has been released earlier.
