Sol:  World Mosquito Day is observed on 20 August annually to raise awareness about the causes of malaria and how it can be prevented.

This day is observed to highlight the efforts of healthcare officials, NGOs, and others in fighting diseases caused by malaria.

On World Mosquito Day every year, awareness is created around diseases caused by mosquitoes.

Theme 2022: “Harness innovation to reduce the malaria disease burden and save lives.”

The day also commemorates the discovery made by British doctor Sir Ronald Ross in 1897 that female mosquitoes transmit malaria between humans. In 1902, Ross won Nobel Prize for Medicine becoming the first British person to receive the award.

The Akshay Urja Day was initiated by the Indian Ministry for New & Renewable Energy Sources in 2004.

The main motive of Akshya urja Diwas is to make people aware that they have to think about renewable energy (Akshya Urja) apart from traditional energy.

The Akshay Urja Diwas in India was established in 2004 with the goal of supporting renewable energy development programs and promoting their usage instead of using traditional sources of energy. The first event of 2004 was organised in New Delhi. Sol:HDFC has opened its first all-women branch with four women bankers in the north Kerala region in Kozhikode.

Sol: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched Vidya Rath-School on Wheels project.

It aims to provide access to underprivileged children to elementary education for 10 months. After 10 months, the children will be integrated into the usual system of education.

Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched the Safai Mitra Suraksha Challenge on the occasion of World Toilet Day on November 19, 2020. It was launched across 243 cities of India, with the objective of mechanizing all sewer and septic tank cleaning operations.

November 19 was designated as “World Toilet Day” by United Nations General Assembly in 2013.

The ‘Air Quality and Health in Cities’ report was released by US-based Health Effects Institute (HEI).

It provides analysis of air pollution and global health effects for over 7,000 cities around the world, focusing on fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2).

As per the report, India is home to 18 of the 20 cities with the most severe increase in fine particle pollutants (PM2.5) from 2010 to 2019.

New Delhi has the highest average level of fine PM 2.5 among the world’s most populated cities. Kolkata at second, Mumbai stands 14th on the list.

No Indian city appeared in the top 20 cities for NO2 exposure, with Shanghai having the worst average exposure.

China recently announced that its troops will take part in the Vostok-2022 military exercises.

This scheme was initiated in 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched first flight under UDAN on April 27, 2017.

The scheme aims to connect small and medium cities with big cities through air service.

In the five years, scheme has benefited more than 1 crore passengers till August 4, 2022.

In 2014, there were just 74 operational airports in India. The number has now increased to 141 by now.

68 underserved or unserved destinations, including 58 Airports, 8 Heliports and 2 Water Aerodromes have been connected under UDAN Scheme, as of now.

This scheme has provided air connectivity to over 29 States/UTs by initiating 425 new routes.

In next four years, government is expecting to add more of 40 crore travellers in India.

Sol:  RBI has cancelled the license of Deccan Urban Co-operative Bank, Karnataka as the bank does not have adequate capital & earning prospects.

As per the data submitted by the bank, more than 99 percent of the depositors are entitled to receive the full amount of their deposits from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC).

In its present financial position, the bank would be unable to pay its depositors in full.

Sol: Kerala’s first tribal novelist and short story writer, Narayan, 82, whose novel Kocharethi gained global recognition, died in Kochi on 16th August 2022.

Narayan completed Kocharethi, his debut novel, in 1988 but struggled to find a publisher. Subsequently, the novel was published in 1998. The novel has been translated to English, Hindi and south Indian languages.

Sol: London home of Dadabhai Naoroji will get a ‘Blue Plaque’, an honour that is reserved for notable personalities who have lived and worked in London.

Naoroji was the first Asian who was elected as a Member of Parliament in Britain.

The Blue Plaque scheme, run by the English Heritage charity, honours the historic significance of particular buildings across London.

Naoroji’s plaque was unveiled to coincide with the 75th-anniversary celebrations of Indian Independence.

Naoroji often referred to as the “grand old man of India”, is reported to have moved to Washington House, 72 Anerley Park, Penge, Bromley, at a time when his thoughts were turning increasingly towards full independence for India in 1897. That red-brick home now has a plaque which reads: “Dadabhai Naoroji 1825-1917 Indian Nationalist and MP lived here”.

The Blue Plaque was erected at the homes of Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Mahatma Gandhi, Sri Aurobindo, Jawaharlal Nehru, and BR Ambedkar among others. Gandhi’s house was commemorated with the Blue Plaque in 1986. India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s home at 60 Elgin Crescent, Notting Hill received the Blue Plaque in 1989.

It is capable of carrying conventional or nuclear operational load up to 40 tonnes.

Tu-160 long-range bombers are also known as strategic bombers.

As of now, strategic bombers do not exist in India’s arsenal. Chinese Air Force has Xian HS-6K.

Besides China, US and Russia are only two other countries with strategic bombers.

B-1, B2 and B-52 are strategic bombers operated by US Air Force. Russia has the Tu-160, Tu-22M3M and Tu-95MS.

As of 2022, Tupolev Tu-160 is the largest and heaviest combat aircraft. It is also the fastest bomber in use and the largest and heaviest variable-sweep wing airplane ever flown.

Sol: Asia’s largest Compressed Biogas (CBG) plant has begun its commercial operations in Sangrur, Punjab.

A formal announcement about commissioning of the Asia’s Largest Compressed Biogas Plant was confirmed by the New and Renewable Energy Minister Aman Arora on 12th August.

The plant which has been setup at village Bhuttal Kalan (Sangrur) has a total operational capacity of 33.23-tonne CBG per day.

The Compressed Biogas being produced by the Sangrur plant is now being supplied to the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL)

The plant will also boost the local rural economy by creating employment for over 8000 skilled and unskilled workers and also attract investment worth Rs 1200/- crores.

Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has also decided to setup 42 additional CBG projects with a total capacity of 58 tonnes per day. ll these biogas plants will use agro-residues to create clean energy.

Sol:  Madhya Pradesh’s tribal-dominated Mandla has become India’s first “functionally literate” district, declared state minister Bisahulal Singh.

A person can be called functionally literate when they are able to write their own name, count, read and write in Hindi.

Mandla collector Harshika Singh said the literacy rate in the district was 68 per cent as per a survey in 2011, while another report in 2020 pointed out that over 2.25 lakh people were not literate in the district and most of them were tribals living in the forest areas.

Within two years, the entire district has become functionally literate.

As part of the project, the government will establish a zoological park on around 150 acres and night safari on 350 acres without disturbing the dense 2,027-hectare forest in the forest area’s eastern and western blocks.

Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh said the new zoological garden in Lucknow would replace the existing one. He called the plan an “ambitious project” and said the government would hire a consultant to conduct a survey and cost assessment.

The 75 acres of Kukrail would be dedicated for leopard and tiger each while 60 acres for wild beer.

Sol:  The Central government has reinstated controversial IAS officer Shah Faesal and appointed him as Deputy Secretary in the Tourism Ministry.

The Centre’s move comes four months after it accepted Faesal’s application for withdrawing his resignation and reinstated him in the service in April.

Faesal, a 2010 batch IAS topper of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir cadre, now AGMUT, had resigned from the services in January 2019 and joined politics, which he later quit in August 2020.

Faesal floated the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement (JKPM) party soon after submitting his resignation. He was detained under the stringent Public Safety Act immediately after the abrogation of special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

It is the only airport in the capital city and third in the state after Pasighat and Tezu airports.

S58. Ans. (1) State Bank of India

Sol: The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) has launched its first branch dedicated to start-ups in Koramangala, Bengaluru.

The branch will provide services ranging from the stage of formation of start-ups to Initial Public Offerings and Follow-on Public Offerings.

SBI Chairman Dinesh Khara launched the branch which is located in Koramangala near HSR Layout and Indiranagar which are the biggest start-up hubs in the city.

After Bengaluru, the next branch will be opened in Gurgaon and third one will be in Hyderabad.

These branches would support the needs of the entire start-up ecosystem.

Sol:  The Centre and the board of National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID) have appointed Rajkiran Rai G as its Managing Director (MD) for five years.

Last year in October 2021, the Centre had appointed K V Kamath as chairperson of NaBFID.

Subsequently, Pankaj Jain and Sumita Dawra were appointed directors to the board.

S60. Ans. (4) Defence Forces

Sol:  Defence forces, RBI and Prime Minister of India are the three Most Trusted Institutions in the country, according to a survey by Ipsos India.

The Supreme Court of India came fourth and it was followed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The survey was conducted by Ipsos India and interviewed 2,950 adults including females.

Ranked first are the Defence Forces with at least 2 in 3 (65%) citizens reposing their faith in them, ranked second was the RBI with 1 in 2 (50%) choosing them, ranked third was the PM of India chosen by 49% of citizens polled, and rank fourth was bagged by the Supreme Court of India (47%), rank fifth occupied by the CBI (43%) and rank 6th by the Police (38%).

This was followed by the Parliament (33%) ranked 7th, the media ranked 8th on the list while placed 9th was the Election Commission of India (31%).

Sol:  President Droupadi Murmu has approved 107 gallantry awards to armed forces and CAPF personnel.

The awards include three Kirti Chakra, 13 Shaurya Chakras, two bar to Sena Medals (gallantry), 81 Sena Medals (gallantry), one Nao Sena Medal (gallantry) and seven Vayu Sena Medals (gallantry).

8 Shaurya Chakras have been awarded to army personnel, including two posthumously.

Naik Devendra Pratap Singh has been awarded the second highest peacetime gallantry award Kirti Chakra.

Naik Devendra Pratap Singh was a part of an operation in Pulwama on January 29 where he killed two hardcore terrorists in a gunfight, showing exceptional bravery.

Sepoy Karn Veer Singh and Gunner Jasbir Singh have been awarded the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

S62. Ans. (1) Jharkhand

Sol:

Amitabh Chaudhary the former BCCI acting secretary and president of Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) has passed away at 58.

He served as acting secretary of the BCCI until 2019 and he was the Indian team manager in Zimbabwe in 2005-06

He was a retired senior IPS officer, who rose to the rank of IGP with the Jharkhand Police and was the chairman of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission.

He played a crucial role in developing infrastructure for Jharkhand cricket.

 

S63. Ans. (2) Rajasthan

Sol:

The Rajasthan government introduced the ‘Mukhyamantri Anuprati Coaching Yojana’ in 2021-22.

Under the scheme, such students are provided free coaching from reputed coaching institutes.

For the current financial year, the state government has allotted Rs 17.15 crore and the number of seats under the scheme has increased to 15,000.

It covers students from scheduled caste, scheduled tribe, other backward classes, minority, economically-backward classes and specially-abled.

In year 2021-2022, state government had aimed to give free coaching to 10,000 students. Out of over one lakh applications, 9,000 students were selected. For that year, government allotted Rs 3.65 crore and spent Rs 3.54 crore.

Sol:

The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) announced the launch of the Centre’s DigiYatra initiative.

It also rolled out the beta version of its app for Android platforms.

DigiYatra is the passenger processing system based on facial recognition technology.

With this technology, all checkpoints would automatically process the entries of the passengers based on the facial recognition system.

 

S65. Ans. (1) Jammu & Kashmir

Sol: On the occasion of Independence Day, police personnel from Jammu and Kashmir bagged 108 police medals for gallantry (PMG), the most among States and Union Territories of the total 347 gallantry awards.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has received the maximum gallantry medals at 109, followed by 108 to the J&K Police, 19 to the Border Security Force (BSF), and six each to the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Within the state police forces, 42 gallantry medals have been given to Maharashtra, 15 to Chhattisgarh for the anti-Maoist operations.

Out of the 347 gallantry awards, 204 personnel are being awarded for their gallant action in Jammu and Kashmir, 80 for displaying bravery in Left Wing Extremism or Naxal violence-affected areas, and 14 personnel for showing bravery in North-East Region, the Union Home Ministry said.

 

S66. Ans. (2) Nipun

Sol: Domestically manufactured new anti-personnel mine “Nipun” and Futuristic Infantry Soldier as a System (F-INSAS) were handed over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to the Indian Army on 16th August 2022.

Indian firms have indigenously manufactured both the defence system.

The F-INSAS is planned to be manufactured in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, in a joint venture between Indian and Russian entities.

This included the AK-203 assault rifle, which will be manufactured in Amethi as part of the joint venture between Indian and Russian entities.

Sol:

Researchers from Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IITH), in association with the LVPEI and CCMB, have developed a 3D-printed cornea from the human donor corneal tissue.

For the first time in India, the researchers 3D-printed an artificial cornea and transplanted it into rabbit eye.

The product is completely natural, contains no synthetic components and is free of animal residues.

 

S68. Ans. (2) Piyush Goyal

Sol:  IAS officer of the Nagaland cadre, Piyush Goyal has been appointed by the Central Government as the new CEO of NATGRID (National Intelligence Grid).

Along with this, the Central Government has also issued an order to post 26 other officers on the post of Additional Secretary.

Piyush Goyal is currently serving as Additional Secretary in the Union Home Ministry.

The post of its CEO was vacant since June when its then chief IPS officer Ashish Gupta was appointed as additional director general of the Border Security Force (BSF).

Chandrakar Bharti, a 1996 batch IAS officer of the Union Territory cadre, has been appointed in place of Piyush Goyal. Presently he is Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence.

NATGRID is the central organization for intelligence gathering with the aim of enhancing India’s counter-terrorism capabilities.

Sol:Pakistan is celebrating its 75th Independence Day on August 14 and has honoured their men’s and women’s cricket team skippers Babar Azam and Bismah Maroof respectively with civil awards.

The government of Pakistan has decided to award the Sitara-e-Imtiaz to Babar Azam while the women’s team captain Bismah Maroof will receive the Tamgah-e-Imtiaz.

Meanwhile, Blind cricketer Masood Jan will receive the Pride of Performance award.

On the occasion of 75th year of independence of the country, President of Pakistan Dr Arif Alvi conferred Pakistan civil awards to 253 Pakistani citizens as well as foreign nationals.

 

S70. Ans. (2) Scotland

Sol: Scottish government said it became the first in the world to legally protect the right to access free period products when its Period Products Act came into force.

A law has taken effect in Scotland to ensure period products are available free of charge to anyone who needs them.

Under the new law, schools, colleges and universities as well as local government bodies must make a range of period products available for free in their bathrooms.

The Scottish government already invested millions of pounds since 2017 to fund free period products in educational institutions, but the law makes it a legal requirement.
