National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and Nagpur metro (Maharashtra) rail project has set a new record for building the longest double-decker (3.14 km) viaduct with an elevated highway, and Metro Rail supported on a single-column pier.

This project has led to savings on land acquisition and construction costs and also reduced the travel time to the city’s airport.

This double-decker viaduct made possible a three-layered transport corridor with the first layer occupied by pre-existing highway, the second layer by a flyover highway, and the third layer by Nagpur metro rail.

The flyover highway is built at the height of 9 meters, and the metro at 20 meters. While 2.7 km of this multi-layered corridor has a four-lane road on its second level, half km has a six-lane road.

The three metro stations built along this double-decker viaduct are Chhatrapati chowk, Jayaprakash Nagar and Ujjwal Nagar.

Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records have recognized this engineering feat. They have also recognized another record of constructing three metro stations on a double-decker viaduct.

The Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd, a Mini Ratna Category 1 Defence PSU and a leading warship building company in India, signed a contract with the West Bengal Government for the design and construction of the next-generation electric ferry that will pave the way for reducing carbon emission in the water transport sector in the state.

This Green vessel has the potential to replace the conventional diesel engine driven ferries operated in the Hooghly River. The arrival of the electric ferry shall transform the inland water transport system in National Waterway- 1 (NW-1), which is being developed from Haldia to Varanasi under the Ministry of Shipping.

The zero-emission electric ferry will be powered by a 210-kWh liquid-cooled energy storage solution and have solar panels mounted on the roof. It will be 24-metre long with an aluminum Catamaran hull and twin propellers. Its piercing hull design will allow an operating speed of 8 knots and a maximum of 10 knot

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari 11th July said Dwarka Expressway is being developed as the first elevated urban expressway in India.

The Expressway connecting Dwarka in Delhi to Gurugram in Haryana is being developed at a total cost of 9,000 crore rupees with a total length of 29 km out of which 19 km length falls in Haryana while the remaining 10 km of length is in Delhi.

Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway is part of the Delhi-Jaipur-Ahmedabad-Mumbai arm of Golden Quadrilateral. The Minister said 50 to 60 percent of traffic on NH-8 will be diverted onto the new expressway.

It will open to traffic in 2023.

In 2012, Malala Yousafzai was awarded the first-ever National Youth Peace Prize by the Pakistan government.

In 2014, at age 17, She became the youngest-ever recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her efforts for children’s rights which had begun even before she was shot.

The UN declared her as “the most famous teenager in the world” in its Decade in Review report in late 2019.

Malala has also been awarded honorary Canadian citizenship and became the youngest person to address the House of Commons in Canada.

The documentary on the activist, He Named Me Malala, was shortlisted for the Oscars in 2015.

World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that two suspected cases of the Marburg virus disease have been detected in Ghana.

The samples of the two patients, who died later, turned positive.

Earlier, Marburg Virus disease has been reported in Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya and South Africa.

Andhra Pradesh Markfed has exported tobacco to the United States, for the first time in the country, for a Government agency.

The agency procured about 3 million kg of tobacco in 2020, following directions by the State Government.

Tobacco use is a major risk factor for many chronic diseases, including cancer, lung disease, cardiovascular disease and stroke. It is one of the major causes of death and disease in India and accounts for nearly 1.35 million deaths every year.

Ferrari racer Charles Leclerc has won the Austrian F1 Grand Prix.

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen came second while Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton finished third.

This was Leclerc’s third win of 2022.

Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare organised a ‘National Conclave on Dragon Fruit’.

The Centre has decided to promote the cultivation of dragon fruit.

At present, this exotic fruit is cultivated in 3,000 hectares; the plan is to increase cultivation to 50,000 hectares in five years.

New figures published by five UN agencies including IFAD showed the world falling further behind in efforts to end hunger and poverty in line with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition report showed that hunger globally rose to as many as 828 million in 2021, an increase of about 150 million since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Environment Minister released the details of new discoveries and new records of fauna and flora at the headquarters of the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) in Kolkata.

In 2021, 540 species have been added to the faunal database and 315 taxa have been added to the list of flora.

The total number of animal species reached 1,03,258 while the number of floral taxa reached 55,048.

Out of the 540 species, 406 species were newly discovered. A new mammal species ‘Crocidura narcondamica’ has been discovered from the Narcondam Island of the Andaman and Nicobar.

In 2021, Boiga whitakeri is the most notable discovery among mammals. 35 new species of reptiles, and 19 species of Pisces were also discovered.

315 taxa of flora added to the list comprises 298 species and 17 intraspecific taxa.

Out of these discoveries, 204 taxa are new to science and 125 taxa are new from India.

Around 28% of the discoveries are from the Western Ghats and the northeastern regions. The most number of taxa were discovered from Kerala (51 taxa), followed by Maharashtra and Arunachal Pradesh.

Taxon (plural taxa) is a taxonomic group of any rank, such as a species, family, or class.
