In addition to the Chief Secretaries of the States and Union Territories, about 200 thematic experts from different fields are participating in this conference.

Sol.Industry body Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI) named Pramod K Mittal, President of Reliance Jio Infocomm, as the new Chairperson of the association for 2022-23.

Mittal was previously the Vice-Chairperson of the COAI, whose members include Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (VIL). Mittal will replace Ajai Puri as the COAI Chairperson.

Sol.Bhogeshwara, reportedly the elephant with the longest tusks in Asia, died of natural causes at the age of 60.

The wild elephant, also known as Mr Kabini, was found dead in the Gundre range of Karnataka’s Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

According to forest department officials, Bhogeshwar’s tusks were 54 meters and 2.34 meters long.

Known for its gentle temperament, the elephant frequented the Kabini backwaters for the last three decades.

Both the tusks almost touched the ground and watching it roaming in the thick jungle was a visual treat.

Sol.Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin has launched the ‘Ennum Ezhuthum scheme’ at an event in Azhinjivakkam panchayat union middle school, Tiruvallur, TN to bridge the learning gap occurred due to COVID-19 pandemic among students aged below 8.

The scheme aims to ensure foundational literacy and numeracy by 2025.

The education department will distribute workbooks to students from Classes 1 to 3 to assess and bridge the learning gap. Under the scheme, a high-level committee has been formed to help each child individually.

The children will be trained in 3 subjects – Tamil, English, and Mathematics in a classroom suitable for conducting lessons that are designed in the format of dance, songs, storytelling, and puppetry, and also videos.

Sol.Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has recently approved the proposal for the development of Phase I of New Greenfield Airport at Dholera in the state of Gujarat.

The New Greenfield Airport at Dholera will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 1,305 crore and it will be completed within a period of 48 months.

According to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), New Greenfield Dholera Airport project is being implemented by Dholera International Airport Company Limited (DIACL).

The Dholera Airport is planned for operationalization from the year 2025-26 and the initial estimated passenger traffic is 3 lakh passengers per annum. However, it is expected to grow to 23 lakh passengers over a period of 20 years. Also, the annual cargo traffic, from the year 2025-26, is estimated at 20,000 tonne, which over a period of 20 years, would increase to 2,73,000 tonne.

The two-day conference is jointly organized by the House of Representatives and the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU).

Nagaland’s first woman elected as Member of Parliament to Rajya Sabha Phangon Konyak is representing India at the Conference.

This year in Egypt, around 200 young MPs, from 60 countries are participating to discuss strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change and ensure that global warming does not exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in line with the Paris Agreement.

Sol.Delhi Government in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) India, has set up an oxygen generation plant at B. Pant Hospital in the national capital to augment the oxygen supply capabilities.

The oxygen plant utilises pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology to produce over one thousand liters of oxygen per minute.

It will serve approximately 750 hospital beds, including those supported by ventilators and the Intensive Care Unit.

The hospital is a super-specialty tertiary care centre and manages referrals from across the country.

Sol.On June 14, 2022, The Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved a proposal to set up Pilibhit Tiger Protection Foundation under the provisions of Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

The cabinet decided to give incentives to set up units in the state’s first proposed medical device park proposed on 350-acre land in Sector 28 of Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA).

It was also decided to implement the Pt Deendayal Upadhyay Kisan Samridhi Yojana in the state till 2026-27.

Pilibhit Tiger Reserve is located in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh. In 2014, it was notified as a tiger reserve.

Sol.Renowned Urdu scholar, linguist, theorist, literary critic, and former Chairperson of Sahitya Akademi Professor Gopi Chand Narang has passed away at 91.

He was a Professor Emeritus at the University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. He has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan (2004) and Sahitya Akademi Awards (1995).

He incorporated a range of modern theoretical frameworks, including stylistics, structuralism, post-structuralism, and Sanskrit poetics.

Sol.The Tamil Nadu Government has signed an agreement with the Pune- based Tata Technologies for upgrading the Industrial Training Institutes (ITI’s) into Technology Centres.

The agreement was signed in presence of the state Chief minister MK Stalin in Chennai.

Modern equipment and tools will be installed at a cost of 2877.43 crore rupees in 71 of the ITI’s in the state under the agreement.

Sol.Gujarat’s Surat has become the first city in the country to get a processed steel slag (industrial waste) road.

It has been built as part of a joint-venture project by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), Union Ministry of Steel, NITI Aayog, and Arcelor-Mitttal-Nippon Steel.

The slag is generated from a steel furnace in the form of molten flux material as an impurity.

India proposed the draft resolution establish the International Day of Yoga and the proposal was endorsed by a record 175 member states. Recognizing its universal appeal, on 11 December 2014, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the International Day of Yoga by resolution 69/131.

Sol. Meghalaya’s Mawsynram has set a new rainfall record of highest single-day rainfall since 1966, breaking Cherrapunji’s record as the wettest place on earth.

Mawsynram received 1003mm rainfall in 24 hours, informed IMD in a statement.

This was the highest single-day rainfall recorded in June, while neighbouring Cherrapunji received 972 mm of rainfall, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The rainfall in Cherrapunji, which is also one of the wettest places on earth, was the highest in June since 1995 and third highest in 122 years. Cherrapunji is located at an aerial distance of 10 km from Mawsynram.

Sol.Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20th June 2022, inaugurated the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) set up at a cost of Rs 280 crore at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) campus, the foundation stone of which was laid by himself.

The Centre for Brain Research was established as an autonomous, non-profit research organization in the IISc, with the generous gift from Gopalakrishnan and his wife Sudha Gopalakrishnan.

During the Programme, the PM also laid the foundation stone for 832-bedded Bagchi Parthasarathy Multispeciality Hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru also dedicated 150 tech hubs to the nation.

Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated and laid the foundation stones of the development works worth over Rs. 28,000 crores.

Sol. The Khuvsgul Lake National Park, which is located in northern Mongolia near Russian border, has been added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO.

The decision was taken during the 34th session of the International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme taking place in Paris, France.

The Khuvsgul reserve holds 70 per cent of freshwater of Mongolia or accounts for 0.4 per cent of world’s total.

This lake is located around 1645 meters above the sea level.

It is a 135 km long and 262-meter-deep lake.

It is nicknamed as “Younger sister” of two “sister lakes”.

Sol.A team of scientists has discovered a new species of bamboo-dwelling bat from a bamboo forest in Meghalaya.

It was named as ‘Glischropus meghalayanus’ after the state of Meghalaya, which is celebrating its 50 years of statehood.

With this discovery, the total number of bat species from India stands at 131 species with Meghalaya registering the highest bat diversity with 67 species.

Sol. India and other member countries of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) supported an initiative of China to organise a joint border operation ‘Solidarity-2023’ for the border agencies of the member countries next year.

India’s Border Security Force (BSF) Director announced this at the conclusion of the eighth meeting of the heads of border authorities of the competent bodies of SCO member states, which was held in Delhi, under the chairmanship of India.

Sol.According to the quarterly report published by Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN), Tamil Nadu has displaced West Bengal to emerge as the largest State in terms of the outstanding portfolio of microfinance loans.

The gross loan portfolio (GLP) of Tamil Nadu as of March 31, 2022 stood at ₹36,806 crore while the overall microfinance industry has a total GLP of ₹2,85,441 crore as of March 31, 2022.

Banks held the largest share of the portfolio in micro-credit followed by NBFC-MFIs.

Sol.Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the extension of the tenure of Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) Vasudevan Pathangi Narasimhan for one year beginning July 23, in line with the request of the bank, the SFB informed exchanges on June 15.

Vasudevan, who founded Equitas in 2007 as a microfinance institution (MFI), announced his decision on May 19 to move on from the SFB to work for his trust going ahead.

India has recycled 75 tonnes in 2021.

India’s gold refining capacity increased by 1,500 tonnes (500 per cent) in 2021 from 300 tonnes in 2013.

Sol.The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance named former Jharkhand Governor Droupadi Murmu as the NDA Presidential Candidate 2022 on June 21, 2022 for the upcoming President Elections.

Droupadi Murmu, if elected, will be the first President of India to belong to a tribal background.

The BJP Parliamentary Party, which had met on June 21, discussed the name of Draupadi Murmu, the former Jharkhand Governor and the tribal leader.

Murmu, 64, who hails from Odisha, served as the first woman governor of Jharkhand. Born into a Santal tribal family in 1958. She entered the state assembly in 2000 on a BJP ticket, and served as a minister between 2000 and 2004 in the BJP-BJD coalition. In 2015, she was named governor of Jharkhand, and she served in that position till last year.

He was appointed as the National Spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party in June 1996.

He was elected to the Lok Sabha on BJP ticket from Hazaribagh constituency in 1998, 1999, and 2009.

He was later appointed as the Union Finance Minister in March 1998 under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s government.

He was later appointed as Minister for External Affairs in July 2002.

He resigned from the post of vice-president of BJP in June 2009.

He quit the BJP citing the “party’s condition” and that “democracy in India is in great danger” in 2018.

He joined the Trinamool Congress in March 2021 to fight against BJP just before the 2021 West Bengal Assembly Election.

He was appointed as the vice president of the Mamata Banerjee-led party in March 2021.

 

S66. Ans.(4) Ruchira Kamboj

Sol.Ruchira Kamboj who is currently the Indian Ambassador to Bhutan has been appointed as the next Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations at New York.

She will succeed TS Tirumurti and is expected to take up as India’s Permanent Representative to UN shortly.

Ruchira Kamboj was the All India Women’s topper of the 1987 Civil Services batch and the topper of the 1987 Foreign Service batch. She had joined the Indian Foreign Service in the same year.

From 2011-2014, Ruchira Kamboj was India’s Chief Protocol. She is the first and only woman diplomat so far in the Indian Government to have held this position.

Sol.Kuwait’s crown prince dissolved parliament on June 22, 2022 and called for an early election following a stand-off between the government and elected assembly that has hindered fiscal reforms in the country.

The move came as 21 opposition MPs have been on strike for eight days in the parliament headquarters over the delaying of legislative sessions and the failure to form a new government.

The last time parliament was dissolved was in 2016.

Objective – To train over one lakh construction workers, through fresh skilling and upskilling programmes.

The NIPUN Project will enable the construction workers to seek better job opportunities, increase their wages and even pursue overseas placements.

National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) will be the Implementation Partner for the project NIPUN.

It will provide trainees with ‘Kaushal Bima’, a three-year accidental insurance with coverage of INR 2 lakhs, digital skills.

The ONORC plan successfully implemented in all 36 States/UTs, making food security portable throughout the country.

One Nation-One Ration Card scheme of the Government of India has been launched in four states on pilot basis on August 1, 2019.

Sol. Australia has announced to provide USD 50 million support to Sri Lanka for meet urgent food and health care.

Sol.Legendary Australian Cricketer Lisa Sthalekar has become the first woman president of the Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA).

Sthalekar played 8 Tests, 125 ODIs, and 54 T20s for Australia between 2001 and 2013, finishing her career with a World Cup win.

She was the first woman to score 1000 runs and take 100 wickets in ODI Cricket.

Sol. The Multinational Peacekeeping Exercise “Ex Khaan Quest -2022” was conducted at Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. Ex Khaan Quest 2022 was conducted from June 06 to June 20, 2022. The exercise provided a platform for mutual learning and sharing best practices amongst the armies from 16 Nations. Indian contingent was represented by personnel from “LADAKH SCOUTS”. They participated in the field training and Command Post exercise.

Sol. South Korea launched its first domestically built space rocket ‘Nuri’ in the country’s second attempt. Earlier, the country failed to place a payload into orbit. With this launch, South Korea become the world’s 10th nation to place a satellite into space with its own technology. After the launch, the officials revealed that Nuri, which is a 5-kg (358 lb) satellite designed to verify the rocket’s performance entered the orbit and successfully made contact with a base station in Antarctica.

Fatima is the only new senator after the re-election of Labor Senators Sue Lines and Glenn Sturle, along with Liberal Senators Mikea Cash and Dean Smith.
