Sol. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s first 5G testbed, allowing startups and industry players to test and certify their technologies domestically and lessen reliance on foreign facilities.

The testbed was built at a cost of approximately Rs 220 crore.

The Prime Minister said the 5G testbed is a significant step toward self-reliance in the direction of critical and modern technologies while speaking at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s silver jubilee celebrations.

The 5G testbed was created as a collaboration project between eight institutes, led by IIT Madras.

Sol.  Kerala will launch a state-owned over-the-top (OTT) platform ‘CSpace’ on November 1, 2022.

The platform will offer an array of movies, short films and documentaries of their choice.

The platform is an initiative of Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) on behalf of the state government, through video conferencing at a function in Kalabhavan Theatre.

Baijal, who took over office on December 31, 2016, after the sudden resignation of Najeeb Jung.

Baijal has served as the Delhi LG for five years and four months, resigned citing personal reasons.

Baijal is a 1969 batch AGMUT cadre, short for Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory, IAS officer. He has served in Delhi as a former vice-chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

Sol. According to the report released by Organisation Internationale des Constructeurs d’Automobiles (OICA), India has surpassed Germany to become the 4th largest vehicle market in the world.

The 1st was occupied by China, followed by the US and Japan.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, India sold 3,759,398 vehicles in 2021 as compared to 2,973,319 vehicles in Germany. This is almost 26 per cent of growth and the only country to register double-digit growth among the top 5 countries.

India is expected to become the third-largest Vehicle market by 2025, However, it requires India to surpass Japan which sold 4,448,340 units in 2021.

Sol. The World Bank has approved 350 million dollars aid for the Systems Reform Endeavors for Transformed Health Achievement in Gujarat -SRESTHA-G project.

Gram Unnati is a social venture that helps farmers increase their net income by increasing price realisation, enhancing agricultural productivity, and lowering cultivation costs.

Sunil Arora, the 23rd Chief Election Commissioner of India, was born on April 13, 1956. He also serves as the president of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB). He is a retired Rajasthan cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the 1980 batch.

Sol. Cameroon Activist, Cécile Ndjebet has won the 2022 Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to preserving forests and improving the lives of people who depend on them.

This award celebrates Cécile Ndjebet’s energy and dedication over three decades to promoting women’s rights to land and forests.

She has actively shown that women’s participation in forest governance and preservation is fundamental to achieving sustainable forest management.

Sol. Eicher Motors has appointed B Govindarajan as the Chief Executive Officer of Royal Enfield.

He will also serve as the Wholetime Director of the Board of Eicher Motors Limited.

Sol. India has reported the first confirmed case of 4 Variant in Hyderabad, Telangana.

The news was revealed on May 19, 2022, by the COVID-19 Genomic Surveillance Program.

Reportedly, the sample was found in an African National who had arrived in India at Hyderabad airport. After sequencing the sample from the individual, it was found that he was carrying BA.4 Omicron Variant.

The 4 is a sub-variant of Omicron. The sub-variant of Omicron was first detected in South Africa in January 2022.

Sol. Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen won the Gold medal in the 52kg category at the Women’s World Boxing Championship 2022.

She beat Thailand’s Jitpong Jutamas in the fly-weight final in Istanbul, Turkey on May 19, 2022.

Nikhat has become the only fifth Indian women’s boxer after Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010, and 2018), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006) and Lekha KC (2006) to win a gold at the World Championships.

This is India’s first gold medal in four years. Mary Kom (48kg) had won the last title in 2018.

Sol. The Coventry City Council and Urban-Air Port Limited, United Kingdom (UK) based Start-up partnered to set up the world’s first Urban airport Pop-up ‘Air-One’, for electric drones and flying cars in the city of Coventry, England.

The aim of the project is to reduce Urban congestion and Pollution. It’s designed for zero-emission electric drones and air taxis and the airport itself is powered by hydrogen fuel cells.

A first-of-its-kind hub, Air-One will serve as a blueprint for over 200 ‘vertiports’ being planned around the world, including the West Midlands, London, Los Angeles, Australia, South Korea, France, Germany, Scandinavia, and Southeast Asia.

Sol. India recorded the highest-ever annual FDI inflow of USD 83.57 billion in the Financial Year 2021-22, overtaking last year’s FDI by USD 1.60 billion.

India’s FDI inflow has witnessed a 23 percent rise post-COVID-19 outbreak despite lockdowns and Russian military operations in Ukraine.

In terms of top investor countries, Singapore is at the top with 27 percent followed by the US (18 percent) and Mauritius (16 percent) during the last fiscal.

Sol. Chinese scientists have proposed a project named Closeby Habitable Exoplanet Survey (CHES) to hunt for habitable Earth-like planets outside our solar system through a space telescope.

This is will be the world’s first space mission specially designed to search for habitable planets in the universe.

The CHES will observe about 100 Sun-like stars 32 light-years away on a long-term survey, and will hopefully discover roughly 50 Earth-like planets or super-Earths, planets that are up to about 10 times the mass of Earth.

Sol. The Cotton Council of India will be formed under the Chairmanship of Suresh Bhai Kotak. It will have representatives from Textiles, Agriculture, Commerce, Cotton Corporation of India, Cotton Research Institute, and the Finance Ministry.

The first meeting of the Cotton Council of India will be organized on 28th May 2022.

The main aim of the council is to bring improvement in the field of Cotton in India. It will discuss the issues related to the Cotton sector and prepare a robust action plan for improvement in this field.

In India, low cotton productivity is the biggest challenge. The cotton production is less despite a large area under cotton cultivation.

Union Textiles Minister Piyush Goyal emphasized the use of better quality seeds for improving the productivity of cotton.

He urged to spinning and trading community for supplying cotton and yarn first to the domestic industry.

Sol. S&P Global Ratings cut India’s growth projection for the current fiscal to 3% from 7.8% on rising inflation and the longer-than-expected Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The rating agency increased its inflation forecast for India by 90 basis points (bps) to 6.3% for the current fiscal year.

S&P had in December last year pegged India’s GDP growth in 2022-23 fiscal, which began on April 1, 2022, at 7.8%. For the next fiscal the growth has been pegged at 6.5%.

Sol. India’s First Indigenous Trainer Aircraft ‘HANSA-NG’ was successfully completed in-flight engine relight test at the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) facility of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) at Challakere on 17th May.

Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) designed and developed ‘HANSA-NG’.

The flight test was carried out at an altitude of 7000-8000 feet with a speed range of 60 to 70 knots by Wing Commanders K V Prakash and NDS Reddy.

The flight tests were monitored by Abbani Rinku, project director of HANSA along with the design team of CSIR-NAL and flight test crew from ASTE – wing commander Senthil Kumar, flight test director, Squad

Sol. Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao felicitated a 110-year-old Indian environmentalist, Saalumarada Thimmakka, at Pragati Bhavan on May 18.

She is from Karnataka and is a real-life embodiment of mother nature.

Thimmakka is noted for her work in planting and tending almost 400 banyan trees near her home on a forty-five-kilometre stretch of highway between Hulikal and Kudur.

She found solace in planting trees, and with the support of her husband, she has also grown about 8,000 other trees.

Sol. China hosted the BRICS foreign ministers’ meet in 2022.

The BRICS Foreign Ministers meeting was chaired by Chinese Foreign Minister and State Councillor Wang Yi.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India S Jai Shankar participated in the meeting, where the foreign ministers discussed the situation in Ukraine and supported talks between Russia and Ukraine.

India handed over the BRICS Chairmanship to China in January 2022.

The theme for BRICS 2022 is ‘Foster High-Quality BRICS Partnership Usher in a New Era for Global Development’.

Sol. Assam Rifles inked a Tripartite MoU with Axis Bank and National Integrity and Educational Development Organisation (NIEDO) to establish a Centre of Excellence and Wellness to secure a better future for the youth of Nagaland.

The center named after Late Capt N Kenguruse MVC Centre of Excellence and Wellness will be located at Chieswema in Kohima district.

Under the MoU, 30 children including boys and girls from economically weaker sections, will be selected from Nagaland and provided free residential coaching to prepare the students for entry to medical and engineering colleges.

Sol. Rajiv Ranjan and Sitikantha Pattanaik have been appointed as the executive directors of Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Rajiv Ranjan was Adviser-in-Charge of the Monetary Policy Department and Secretary to the Monetary Policy Committee before being appointed to executive director. Pattanaik was an adviser at the Department of Economic and Policy Research before being appointed to ED.

Rajiv Ranjan will oversee the Monetary Policy Department as Executive Director, while Pattanaik will oversee the Department of Economic and Policy Research (DEPR).

Sol. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Abdulla Bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, United Arab Emirates has launched “India-UAE start-up bridge” at India-UAE Economic Partnership Summit in Mumbai.

This bridge will act as a one-stop platform where information regarding the Indian and UAE startup ecosystem will be easily accessible to entrepreneurs and stakeholders from both countries.

This is the first such bridge/platform by the UAE with any country.

In December 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as IDB, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

Sol. Every year, United Nations (UN) International Day to End Obstetric Fistula is marked on 23rd May since 2013 to promote action towards treating and preventing obstetric fistula, a condition that affects many girls and women during childbirth in developing countries.

The day is being observed to significantly raise awareness and intensify actions towards ending obstetric fistula, as well as urging post-surgery follow-up and tracking of fistula patients.

Obstetric fistula is one of the most serious and tragic injuries that can occur during childbirth.

Sol. In the United States, Armed Forces Day is marked on the third Saturday of May. This year, the day will be marked on 21 May.

This day is celebrated to pay tribute to the men and women who served the US Armed Forces.

Armed Forces Day honours people who have served, or are currently serving, the United States in uniform in times of peace and war. The day also honours individuals who are part of the US Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserve units.

 

S37. Ans.(2) Mount Everest

Sol. National Geographic Society has installed the “World’s highest weather station” on Mount Everest at an altitude of 8,830 metres to automatically measure various meteorological phenomena.

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM) said the automatic weather station was installed a few metres below the summit point last week as the snow and ice on the summit are not suitable for fixing equipment.

The weather monitoring system, powered by solar energy, is supposed to measure various meteorological phenomena like air temperature, wind speed and direction, air pressure, change in surface height of snow, and incoming and outgoing short and longwave radiation.

The NatGeo team, led by climate scientist Baker Perry from the Appalachian State University in the US, consisted of climbers and scientists, many of whom scaled the world’s highest peak while installing the weather station.

 

S38. Ans. (2) Mushfiqur Rahim

Sol. Bangladesh batter Mushfiqur Rahim achieved the distinction of being the first cricketer in the country to score 5000 runs in test matches.

Mushfiqur achieved this feat after playing 149 innings in 81 tests after his debut in 2005. He has scored 8 centuries and 26 half-centuries till now.

The feat has been achieved 22 years after Bangladesh played its first test match.

He is the 99th cricketer in the world to achieve this goal.

Another Bangladesh batter Tamim Iqbal needed 152 runs to score 5000 in the test match but he retired hurt on the third day of the match after scoring 133, remaining short of 19 runs from the coveted goal of 5000 runs.

Sol. Vipin Sanghi, who was till now the acting chief justice of Delhi high court, has been appointed as the chief justice of Uttarakhand high court by a Supreme Court collegium led by chief justice of India CV Ramana and other senior SC judges.

Sanghi will be taking over from Uttarakhand HC’s current acting chief justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra.

Sol. The New Development Bank (NDB), the BRICS countries’ multilateral bank based in Shanghai, will open its first regional office in India at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City) to address the country’s infrastructural and sustainable development needs.

The India office will concentrate on extending its presence in the country by developing, implementing, and monitoring new projects.

NDB’s existing regional offices will be supplemented by the new India office. Its Africa Regional Center (ARC) opened in Johannesburg in 2017, the Americas Regional Office (ARO) in So Paulo with a sub-office in Brasil in 2019, and the Eurasian Regional Centre (ERC) in Moscow in 2020.

The NDBwas founded in July 2015 by the BRICS countries of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Since then, Bangladesh, UAE, Egypt, and Uruguay have joined the bank.

Sol. Phonepe will acquire wealth management platforms Wealthdesk & OpenQ

Flipkart’s PhonePe, an Indian payments business backed by Walmart Inc., is acquiring two wealth management firms for $75 million in total.

WealthDesk will cost roughly $50 million, while OpenQ will cost nearly $25 million, including debt.

Customers may invest in equities and exchange-traded funds through WealthDesk, which was formed in 2016 and is based in Mumbai, India’s financial hub. OpenQ also provides trading baskets and investing analytics to consumers and institutional customers.

PhonePe, managed by Sameer Nigam and started in 2015, was partially split out from Flipkart in 2020. Walmart directly owns around 10% of PhonePe, while the e-commerce behemoth owns roughly 87 percent.

The technology was first developed to make khoya and other milk products, and the portfolio of applications was later extended to textile, milk and food, pharma, plywood, paper mills, leather industry, chemical industry, hot water boiler generator, plastic recycle, laundry, hospitals and so on.

Geniusenergy Critical Innovation, a start-up recognized by of India, was incubated by the National Innovation Foundation (NIF), an autonomous body of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India.

Sol. German club Eintracht Frankfurt has won their first European trophy in 42 years after defeating the Rangers by 5-4 on penalties in Seville, Spain.

Goalkeeper, Kevin Trapp has saved at the end of extra time and another in the shootout to help give Frankfurt the 5-4 win on penalties.

Scottish club Rangers was also trying to win its first European title since the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972.

Sol. Former Australian women’s team coach Matthew Mott has been appointed the new head coach for England men’s white-ball team.

Mott, 48, has signed a four-year agreement and is expected to be in place for England’s three-match ODI series against The Netherlands in Amsterdam next month.

Sol. Union Minister for Minority Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak has inaugurated the 41st ‘Hunar Haat’, which provides market exposure and employment opportunities to artisans, craftsmen and traditional culinary experts.

More than 800 artisans and craftsmen from 32 states and Union Territories are participating in the 12-day ‘Hunar Haat’, being organised at Shilpgram in Agra’s Tajganj.

Stressing that ‘Hunar Haat’ is a credible confluence of ‘vocal for local’, ‘swadeshi’, ‘self-reliant India’ and ‘ek bharat shreshtha bharat’ initiatives.

Cutting across barriers of caste, community, region and religion, ‘Hunar Haat’ has provided employment and self-employment opportunities to about 10.5 lakh artisans and craftsmen from all sections of the society in the last six years. More than 50 per cent beneficiaries are women artisans from all sections.
