Atal Tunnel Rohtang: Lenght, Weather, Map, Temperature Today

Atal Tunnel Rohtang

Rohtang Tunnel is another name for Atal Tunnel. It is a roadway tunnel built beneath the Rohtang Pass in the Himalayas’ eastern Pir Panjal range. It is located in Himachal Pradesh, India, on the Leh-Manali Highway. Atal Tunnel is named after Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India’s former Prime Minister.

Atal Tunnel Length

It is the world’s longest roadway single-tube tunnel over 10,000 feet, with a length of 9.02 kilometres. Both the Leh-Manali Highway and the Nimmu–Padum–Darcha road sections will become all-weather roads once the existing Atal Tunnel is completed and the under-construction Shingo La Tunnel is completed. It is expected to be finished by 2024.

Manali to Atal Tunnel Rohtang Length (Atal Tunnel ki Lambai)

The tunnel cuts the time and distance between Manali and Keylong on the way to Leh, and the route, which previously passed through Gramphu, used to take 5 to 6 hours in excellent weather. The former route had a length of 116 kilometres. A traveller can now travel from Manali to the tunnel’s South Portal in about 45 minutes, covering a distance of 24.4 kilometres. The 9.02-kilometre long tunnel takes around 15 minutes to travel through, and the revised route via the tunnel reduces the overall distance travelled to 71 km. In roughly 2 hours, you can travel this distance. When compared to the previous route, the time saved is approximately 3 to 4 hours. The tunnel avoids most of the areas where roadblocks, avalanches, and traffic jams were common.

Atal Tunnel Weather and Temperature Today

The New Austrian tunnelling method was used to construct the tunnel. A semi-transverse ventilation system has also been installed. Large fans move air separately across the tunnel in a semi-transverse ventilation system. The cross-section of the tunnel also includes a 2.25 m tall and 3.6 m wide emergency tunnel. It is supposed to be beneath the main highway and used for emergency evacuation.
Fires will be contained within a 200-meter radius of the tunnel. At certain locations, even fire hydrants are available. A public announcement system is also installed in the tunnel to make critical announcements in the event of an emergency.
Heavy snowfall in the Rohtang Pass area is a serious issue, and avalanche control facilities have been built to avoid any damage to the roadways and to assure the safety of road and tunnel users alike. Because the Atal tunnel is projected to see a lot of traffic, CCTV cameras have been installed at regular intervals throughout the tunnel. For vehicle control and pollution monitoring, these CCTV cameras are connected to two monitoring rooms on both ends of the tunnel. Pollution sensors regularly monitor the tunnel’s air quality. Fresh air is fed into the tunnel by two heavy-duty blowers on each side of the tunnel if the air quality falls below the desired level.

According to the meteorological center, the maximum temperature of the Atal Tunnel is 6 to 7 degrees below normal. At 6.6 degrees Celsius, Keylong was the coldest inhabited place in Himachal. The minimum temperature in Shimla was 13.7 degrees C and the minimum temperature in Dalhousie was recorded at 12.5 degrees C.

Atal Tunnel Weather: Challenges in Construction

The most difficult duty was continuing the excavation under heavy snowfall in the winter, and tunnelling excavation was done from both ends. The north portal was not accessible during the winter since the Rohtang pass closed during the winter, hence the excavation was done solely from the south portal.
Other obstacles to the tunnel’s progress included issues disposing of almost 8 lakh m3 of excavated rock and soil, the heavy incursion of water, more expensive treatment, and a slowing of excavation from 5 metres per day to half a metre per day. There were also unstable rocks that hindered the blasting and excavating even more. A cloudburst and flash flood also killed 42 workers who were working on the makeshift access road.
