Cabinet Ministers of India
The Union Council of Ministers (Cabinet Ministers of India), which serves as the top executive body of the executive branch, is the Government of India’s main executive body. The leaders of each executive government ministry sit on it, which is presided over by the prime minister. The Cabinet Ministers of India 2023 currently has 29 members, including the prime minister, and is presided over by Narendra Modi, the current prime minister. The Indian Parliament has jurisdiction over the council or Cabinet Ministers of India.
In India, a smaller executive body known as the Union Cabinet, which is a subset of the Union Council of Ministers (Cabinet Ministers of India) and holds significant portfolios and ministries of the government, is the ultimate decision-making body.
Ranking of Cabinet Ministers of India
The council of ministers (Cabinet Ministers of India) is divided into the following five groups, listed in decreasing order of rank:
- Prime Minister: Head of the Indian government’s executive branch.
- If there is one, the deputy prime minister serves as the senior cabinet minister or as acting prime minister.
- Cabinet Minister: A cabinet member who oversees a ministry.
- Junior minister without answering to a cabinet minister is a minister of state (independent charge).
- A deputy minister who reports to a cabinet minister and is typically given a specific role within that ministry is known as a minister of state (MoS).
Appointment and Removal of Cabinet Ministers of India
According to Article 75, the President, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister, appoints ministers who serve at the leisure of the president. Evidence suggests that an MP’s electoral success increases the likelihood of being given a cabinet position at least since the turn of the millennium.
Following are the conditions under which the Cabinet Ministers of India can be removed:
- If a Cabinet minister dies
- Upon the Prime Minister’s resignation, death, or self-resignation.
- After being fired by the President for a minister’s violations of Article 75 (2).
- After receiving a directive from the judiciary for breaking the law.
- When a person loses their eligibility to serve in parliament.
- The Prime Minister and the whole Council of Ministers must resign in accordance with Article 75’s “Collective Responsibility” clause if a Vote of No Confidence is approved by the Lower House (Lok Sabha) of the Indian Parliament.

Cabinet Ministers of India: Council of Ministers in state governments
According to Articles 163, 164, and 167, every state in India is run by a council of ministers (Cabinet Ministers of India) that follows similar norms and procedures to the union council of ministers (c).
The Supreme Court of India first exercised its authority under Article 142 of the Indian Constitution in March 2020 to remove a minister serving the state of Manipur.
