What is the capital of Assam?- History
Beginning in 1970, the Indian government separated Assam into various states in response to the requests of the Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo peoples of the Meghalaya Plateau, and the districts encompassing the Khasi Hills, Jaintia Hills, and Garo Hills were established into an autonomous state within Assam. In 1972, Meghalaya was established as a distinct state, and in 1986, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram were separated from Arunachal Pradesh.
Since Assam was restructured after independence, sectarian tensions and violence have persisted, separatist parties have formed along ethnic lines, and demands for autonomy and sovereignty have grown, fragmenting the state.
The Assam government issued law in 1961 making the use of the Assamese language mandatory, but it was later repealed due to pressure from Bengali speakers in the state.
Armed separatist groups such as the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) grew in strength after the 1970s, and the Indian army was deployed in November 1990, after which low-intensity military conflicts and political homicides continued for more than a decade. Ethnic militant groups have gained in popularity in recent years.
