The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced major changes in the CBSE Board Internal Assessment 2025 weightage. The CBSE has confirmed these major changes in the internal assessment’s weightage along with other significant modifications in the board exam like 10 to 15% syllabus reduction. The CBSE has increased the weightage of the internal assessment marks to 40% while the board has decreased the weightage of written exam marks to 60%.
CBSE Board Internal Assessment 2025
In a recent announcement regarding the forthcoming CBSE board exams in 2025, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) revealed a modification in the assessment framework for students in Classes 10 and 12. As per Vikas Kumar Agrawal, the regional officer of CBSE in Bhopal, internal assessments will constitute 40% of the overall marks, while the final written exams will account for the other 60%. This modification, along with a decrease of 10-15% in the curriculum, was talked about at a principals’ summit titled “Bridging the Gap.”
CBSE Board Internal Assessment 2025 Weightage Increased
A significant change in assessment is the increased focus on internal evaluations. Agrawal stated that internal evaluations, such as projects, assignments, and regular tests, will now make up 40% of a student’s final grade. Regarding this change, the CBSE’s Bhopal regional officer Vikas Kumar Agrawal stated, “This change promotes continuous learning and gives students more opportunities to showcase their progress throughout the year”. Through this method, the board seeks a more thorough assessment that represents students’ abilities beyond just the final written test.
Other Changes Introduced to CBSE Board Exam 2025
Apart from an increase in the marks weightage for the CBSE Board Internal Assessment 2025, the CBSE has introduced a slew of changes. The CBSE official Agrawal highlighted the major alterations, stating that the rise in internal assessments and the reduction of the syllabus are intended to simplify the evaluation process while conforming to modern educational practices.
Mr Agrawal stated that, “These updates aim to align assessments with evolving educational trends, ensuring students’ academic growth and preparation for higher education.” In the 2024-2025 academic year, there will be a single term, with intentions to implement two terms in the 2025-2026 academic session.
Reduced Syllabus to Ease Academic Pressure
In its continued efforts to alleviate academic pressure, the CBSE has declared a 10-15% decrease in syllabus content for all subjects in the 2025 examinations. Agrawal stated that this decrease aligns with earlier modifications that highlight targeted learning while reducing rote memorization.
Open Book Exams and Digital Assessment for Select Subjects
CBSE will continue its digital assessment system for answer sheets in certain subjects, a method introduced in recent years to enhance transparency and efficiency in the evaluation process. Furthermore, the board intends to introduce open-book tests for subjects such as English Literature and Social Science. In this format, students can consult their books, evaluating their analytical abilities and knowledge application instead of relying on memorization.
One Term Exam in 2025, Two Terms Exam in 2026
The existing one-term structure will be maintained for the 2025 board examinations. Starting in 2026, the board plans to return to a format of two terms. Agrawal stated that the choice to implement two exams has been confirmed, with plans likely to be arranged in the coming months. Agrawal affirmed that the choice to reinstate two-term CBSE Board exams in 2026 has been finalized, though logistical details are still under development. This adjustment is anticipated to provide students with greater chances to demonstrate their knowledge throughout the academic year.
