Narmada Bachao Andolan is the first such movement at the national level which is related to development and the environment. On April 5, 1961, the Sardar Sarovar Dam Project on the Narmada River was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru. The two largest and multi-purpose projects were identified as Sardar
Sarovar in Gujarat and Narmada Sagar Dam in Madhya Pradesh. There was no agreement on a suitable water distribution policy among the 4 states of India, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, so the government constituted the ‘Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal in 1969 to resolve the water dispute issue.
