CS Full Form: A History of Computer Science

Computer science’s basic foundations date back to the advent of the modern digital computer.
Gottfried Leibniz exhibited the Stepped Reckoner, a digital mechanical calculator, in 1673. Leibniz is credited with being the first computer scientist and theorist. The mechanical calculator industry was founded by Thomas de Colmar in 1820. He created the first calculating machine, the simplified arithmometer, in 1820. The Difference Engine, designed by Charles Babbage, was the first automatic mechanical calculator. It eventually inspired him to create the Analytical Engine, the first programmable mechanical calculator.
Herman Hollerith invented the tabulator in 1885. To process statistical data, punched cards were employed. Following Babbage, Percy Ludgate published the second of only two mechanical analytical engine ideas in history in 1909. In 1937, Howard Aiken persuaded IBM to construct the ASCC/Harvard Mark I, a gigantic programmable calculator based on Babbage’s Analytical Engine. Babbage’s Analytical Engine was based on cards and a central computer.
With the introduction of new powerful computing devices like the Atanasoff–Berry computer and the ENIAC in the 1940s, the term “computer” started to refer to the machines. The area of computer science expanded when it became evident that computers could be used for more than just mathematical calculations. The Watson Scientific Computing Laboratory at Columbia University in New York City was founded by IBM in 1945. Furthermore, the university’s strong affiliation with IBM aided the birth of a new scientific discipline, with Columbia offering one of the earliest academic-credit courses in computer science in 1946.
In the 1950s and 1960s, computer science emerged as a distinct academic discipline. In 1953, the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory launched the world’s first computer science degree programme. Purdue University established the first computer science department in the United States.
