CUET 2025 Latest Changes
In an interview with PTI, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chief M Jagadesh Kumar informed about a number of major changes to the Common University Entrance Test (CUET 2025), addresses several areas of the exams, such as their structure, subjects, syllabus, and operational logistics. Let’s take a look at the tentative changes that might improve the efficiency and standard of national-level CUET exams for admissions to undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Back to Fully Computer Based Test Mode
According to the suggested revisions, UGC and NTA intend to return to the computer-based test format rather than maintaining the hybrid model. In its debut edition in 2022, CUET-UG experienced technical difficulties, as the tests for a subject were administered throughout many shifts, the scores had to be normalized prior to the presentation of results.
In 2023, UGC determined that for topics with higher registration, the test would be administered on OMR sheets rather than the Computer Based Test (CBT) format. Last year, The exam was administered in a hybrid style for the first time in 2024 which also reduced the number of “exam days”. It was canceled across Delhi the night before it was to be held, citing logistical reasons.
However, this has changed in the upcoming 2025 session, “Unlike the previous year’s hybrid mode, the exam will be conducted entirely in CBT mode starting in 2025.
Decline in CUET Subject List
In the upcoming session, we will see a drastic reduction in the subjects in the UPG admission subject list. UGC has announced the abolition of 20 foreign languages and six domain disciplines. The number of CUET UG subjects was lowered from 63 to 37. The number of subjects will be reduced from 63 to 37, with admissions to the deleted subjects based on General Aptitude Test (GAT) scores. Refer to the list of deleted subjects below:
- Languages Subjects: (French, Spanish, German, Nepali, Persian, Italian, Arabic, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Santhali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, Japanese, Russian, Chinese)
- Domain Subjetcs (Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, Engineering Graphics)
CUET Changes in Subject Selection
According to the new recommendations, students will be permitted to take the CUET UG in up to five courses instead of six previously. However, subject flexibility has been offered beginning this year. “Candidates will also be allowed to choose subjects in CUET UG that they haven’t studied in class 12 Standard. This change is intended to provide students more flexibility and break down disciplinary barriers, allowing them to explore various areas for higher education
Exam Duration Fixed for All subjects
Earlier the CUET UG Exam duration ranged from 45 to 60 minutes depending on the subject, which has now been standardized at 60 minutes for all subjects” The concept of additional questions in the exam has also been done away with, and all questions will be compulsory now. Last year, CUET UG was held in three shifts on exam days: 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., 12.30 p.m. to 2 p.m., and 4 p.m. However, this year, UGC has proposed a common 60-minute time for all papers.
The UGC has also shirked down the exam duration for the CUET PG exam as well. As per the draft released by UGC, the CUET PG exam will last 90 minutes, down from 105 minutes previously.
Total marks Fixed for Each Subject
After making all the questions compulsory, ends a huge area of misunderstanding of the CUET Total Marks. Most students are confused about what is the total marks if they take 5 subjects. From the CUET 2025 Session, there will only be 50 questions in each subject regardless of language or domain. As a result, the total marks set for the CUET UG exam is 250 marks
