Ganesh Chaturthi Celebration
Ganesh Chaturthi is a Hindu festivitie that commemorates the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, the god of prosperity and knowledge. It begins on the fourth day (Chaturthi) of Bhadrapada (August-September), the sixth month in the Hindu calendar.
Every year, his birth is commemorated with great pomp and enthusiasm during a 10-day festival that includes four major rituals: Prana Pratishta, Shodashopachara, Uttarpuja, and Ganpati Visarjan.
Devotees bring home clay idols of Lord Ganesha, adorned with flowers, garlands, and sweets. Prayers and offerings are made to the deity, requesting blessings for wisdom, prosperity, and success. Prana Pratishta is a priest-led ceremony in which mantras are read to invoke Ganesha’s presence in the clay deity, followed by formal prayers in a 16-step devotion known as Shodashopachara.
The event culminates in a big immersion ritual in which Lord Ganesha’s idols are immersed in surrounding water bodies. This represents the conclusion of Ganesha’s earthly journey and his return to his heavenly home. This ceremony, known as Ganpati Visarjan, represents his return to Mount Kailash, a peak in the Himalayas where Shiva and Parvati are thought to live.
