What are Green Crackers & How do we identify them?
“Green Crackers’ is one of the most discussed topics before Diwali. Green crackers don’t contain any hazardous compounds. They are environmentally friendly. Green crackers are safer than traditional firecrackers and lower air pollution.
One of the favorite activities is firecrackers during the Diwali celebration 2023 and it’s evident every time that air pollution is worsening and harming people’s health because of crackers. Green Crackers were created by the CSIR, and they outperformed prior sound-emitting fireworks and other types of fireworks. Let’s read more about green crackers, their composition, and how we identify them.

What are Green Crackers?
The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has produced “Green Crackers,” which are firecrackers or pyrotechnics with smaller shells and less raw materials and additives in order to cut down on emissions, particularly particulate matter emissions (PM). Pollutant emissions from green crackers are 30% lower than those from traditional crackers. It is an environmentally beneficial response to India’s air pollution issues as well as a step toward tackling climate change. Green crackers also generate about 30% less noise as compared to conventional crackers.
Green Crackers Name: EcoFriendly Crackers
The traditional firecrackers, which have severely damaged the environment, have been the subject of significant legal challenges in the last few years. Based on numerous hearings in higher courts, the Supreme Court granted CSIR permission to produce green crackers in large quantities and guarantee their sale in the market in 2019.
The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) created these, and contracts for their production and market sale have been inked with about 230 businesses.
These green crackers, designed by the National Environmental and Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), a CSIR lab, contain flower pots, pencils, fireworks, maroons, bombs, and chakkar.
How do We identify Green Crackers?
One of the most common questions that arise among normal citizens regarding Green crackers is’ How do we identify them?’ One should identify the green crackers by checking the CSIR NEERI logo on the package of fireworks.

Difference between Green crackers and Traditional crackers
Green crackers use the least amount of aluminum and thermite. They don’t have the barium compounds that give green things their color. A metal oxide that increases noise and air pollution is barium nitrate. Instead, potassium nitrate is used as an oxidant in green crackers. Black powder, oxidizing substances like nitrates, chlorates, and perchlorates, as well as reducing substances like sulfur, are used in traditional crackers.
Green crackers: Composition
Here is a list of components used in Green crackers.

Regulators | speed and intensity of bursts
oxidizing substances | Nitrates and chlorates(produce oxygen inside the cracker)

Reducing agent | Sulfur(burns oxygen) |
Green crackers: Types
According to Dr. Suman Mor, Chairperson of the Department of Environment Studies at Panjab University, only the crackers produced by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research come within the three categories of SWAS, SAFAL, and STAR (CSIR). “SWAS,” or “safe water releaser,” should have a small water pocket or droplets that release vapor when they break.
In India, there are three different varieties of green crackers:
- SWAS (Safe Water Releaser)
- SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium)
- STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker)
What are Green crackers and What makes them Eco-friendly and Less Polluting
In order to reduce emissions, especially particulate matter emissions, the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has created “Green Crackers,” which are firecrackers or pyrotechnics with smaller shells and less raw ingredients and additives (PM). green crackers make around 30% less noise than traditional crackers.
Types of Green crackers | Specifications |
SWAS | Discharge water vapor Reduced emission of particulate particles by 30 Gaseous emissions diluent No sulfur or potassium nitrate |
STAR | No sulfur or potassium nitrate Release of fewer particulates lowered noise level |
SAFAL | utilization of aluminum is minimal Aluminum is substituted with magnesium. Lowered noise level |
Green Crackers: Advantages
Compared to ordinary crackers, green crackers have a number of advantages.
- Less pollution: The air quality has been deteriorating every year after the Diwali holiday. Green fireworks in India will have a good effect on this situation for obvious reasons.
- Fewer accidents: Traditional firecrackers have a loud bang and a strong spark, which has led to several mishaps. Green fireworks have reduced such mishaps because they have controlled loudness and intensity.
- Emissions are decreased since the green crackers’ raw materials are less polluting and because the dust is suppressed, fewer particles are released into the atmosphere. These crackers emit air or water vapor to reduce dust and dilute gaseous emissions.
Apart from the advantages of green crackers, One of the greatest drawbacks of green crackers is that they can only be produced by companies that have agreements in place with the CSIR. The conventional type of crackers is made in all the other businesses, which could result in job losses. No small factory will be permitted to make green crackers.
