Happy Navratri 2024
Navratri, a Hindu festival, is held in Ashwin, usually in September or October, to honor the nine appearances of Goddess Durga. This year, it starts on October 3, 2024, and finishes on October 12, with Dusherra, or Vijaya Dashmi.
Sharad or Shardiya (autumn) Navratri, also known as Maha Navratri, is the most important of the four Navratris, with Magha (winter), Chaitra (spring), and Ashadha (monsoon). Every day of the nine-day celebration, which honors the nine incarnations of Durga, is marked by fasts. It commemorates Goddess Durga’s destruction of Mahishasura, a demon, following a nine-day struggle that ended on the tenth day as Vijayadashami, which is why she is known as Mahishasuramardini or the slayer of Mahishasur.

Navratri 2024 Celebration
Navratri is an important Hindu festival dedicated to the divine feminine. Navratri lasts nine days in the month of Ashvin, or Ashvina (September-October on the Gregorian calendar). It frequently concludes with the Dussehra (also known as Vijayadashami) celebration on the tenth day. There are four comparable festivals, also known as Navratri, occurring at different times of the year. However, the early October celebration, also known as Sharad Navratri, is the most prominent.
- In Bengal and Assam, the event is called Durga Puja (“Rite of Durga”). Special pictures of Durga commemorating her victory over the buffalo-headed monster Mahishasura are worshipped every day, and on the tenth day (Dussehra), they are carried in ecstatic procession to surrounding rivers or reservoirs for immersion in water.
- In certain regions, Dussehra is combined with Navratri, and the full 10-day event is known by that name. Dussehra, whether celebrated throughout the festival or on the tenth day, commemorates the triumphs of good over evil, such as Durga’s victory over Mahishasura. In some parts of India, Dussehra commemorates the god Rama’s victory over the demon ruler Ravana.
- In northern India, the Ram Lila (“Play of Rama”) is the festival’s main attraction. On successive evenings, young actors lavishly costumed and disguised perform various incidents of the epic poem the Ramayana; the procession is always climaxed by the burning of massive demon effigies.
