HPNLU Shimla, formally the Himachal Pradesh National Law University Shimla is one of the odd 20 National Law Universities located in India. NLU Shimla was established in the year 2016, by the  Himachal Pradesh Act of 2016. The university is now a member of the consortium for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted approval to the university, and the CLAT Cutoff list has placed it fifth among NLUs. Currently, the institution offers doctorate, postgraduate, and undergraduate programs to students.

NLU Shimla (HPNLU): Course Seats

There are only a limited number of seats available for different courses offered at HPNLU Shimla. The most number of seats are present for the BA LLB (Hons) program which is 120 in number. The seats for the PhD program in Law is only 20, the least among all the other courses. It is important to remember that the seats are also reserved for candidates having the domicile of Himachal Pradesh apart from the social reservation. HPNLU Shimla Admission Process

The admission process for the courses offered at HPNLU Shimla takes place through different methods. The admission to the undergraduate and postgraduate law programs is done through the national -level Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). For admission into the PhD in Law program, the university conducts its own entrance test. Being a National Law University, the competition level is very high for admission into any of the program offered at HPNLU Shimla.

Candidates who want to apply for the bachelor’s law program will have to appear for the CLAT UG exam. Students who score relevant marks in the exam and appear in the merit list will be then able to take admission into this college. The admission test for the postgraduate LLM course is CLAT PG and it is HPNLU- CET for the MBA in Law course. Admission to the doctoral law program takes place through the entrance test organized by the HPNLU. The admission process for different courses of HPNLU is given below.

For BA LLB (Hons) and BBA LLB (Hons) programs

To participate in the admissions process, those wishing to apply for the five-year integrated law degree, BA LLB (Hons), must pass the CLAT UG exam. Upon meeting the mandatory CLAT cut-off marks, applicants will be eligible to participate in the subsequent admissions procedure. Put another way, the CLAT UG exam will be used to determine admission to the HPNLU Shimla undergraduate law program.

For LLM Program

Applicants who wish to apply for the LLM course must pass the CLAT PG program and score the necessary marks (equal to or higher than the required cut off). Students can participate in the admissions process if their admit card number appears in the HPNLU Shimla admission merit list. The admission process for the LLM and MBA program are different.

For MBA Law Program

Candidates who want to study MBA in Law at the HPNLU Shimla must appear for the entrance exam conducted by the university. Candidates will have to take the Himachal Pradesh National Law University – Common Entrance Test (HPNLU- CET) and pass it with required marks to get admission into the MBA Law program.

 For PhD in Law Program

Candidates will be selected for the PhD program based on the marks secured in the national-level PhD law test conducted by HPNLU Shimla. The entrance test will be held for a total of 150 marks which will contain MCQs and Descriptive-type questions. The MCQ-type questions will be asked for 100 marks while the descriptive questions will be asked for 50 marks only.

HPNLU Admission 2024

The HPNLU admission for the UG and PG programs is ongoing through the CLAT 2024 counselling process. CLAT Round 3 cutoff is out for HPNLU Shimla admission 2024 to UG and PG courses. May 14, 2024 is the deadline for candidates who selected the Freeze Option in the First, Second, and Third Allotment Lists to make their final payment of the university fee to the relevant NLU. Additionally, on May 20, 2024, CNLU will issue the CLAT Round 4 for all the NLUs, including NLU Shimla (HPNLU).

The HPNLU PhD program is now accepting applications for the class of 2024; the deadline is February 25, 2024. Candidates who are interested in registering must pay the INR 2,500 application fee on the official website in order to finish the registration process.

As we know that National Law University, Shimla, conducts its own test for admission into the PhD program. The application form for the PhD program is submitted through the online mode. The entrance exam is conducted for 150 marks consisting of objective and subjective questions.
