The acronym, KAS, stands for Kashmir Administrative Service. Jammu and Kashmir’s administrative civil service is known as the Kashmir Administrative Service(KAS). The Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission recruits officers for this position using a test known as the KAS examination. For the recruitment of several state civil service cadres, a statewide combined competitive examination is held.
The KAS test is divided into three stages: preliminary candidate selection, consisting of objective-type papers; and final candidate selection, consisting of multiple-choice questions. The preliminary test determines whether or not candidates are eligible to take the main exam. The second and most important round consists of nine essay-style questions with descriptive answers. Furthermore, Phase-III includes a viva exam format, which requires candidates to challenge the Oral test, which is used to assess a candidate’s mental aptitude for many subjects.
The applicants who pass the KAS exam are subsequently appointed to various administrative positions at the district level, such as Sub Divisional Magistrate or Additional Deputy Commissioners. After serving as a KAS officer for a certain amount of time, they are promoted to IAS officer ranks such as District collector if necessary.
