In India, law entrance exams are held at two levels: national in which candidates from any region but only state residents can apply and appear for the examination, or nationality can apply and appear. Law Exams are conducted for admission in renowned law colleges such as National Law Universities (NLUs) and top private law colleges such as Symbiosis Law Schools, Symbiosis International University (SIU), School of Law, UPES, ILS Law College, Faculty of Law, ICFAI Law School and Jamia Milia Islamia, Army Institute of Law. Law Entrance Exams

Taking law entrance exams in 2025 is a careful decision for applicants who desire to pursue careers other than the traditional engineering and medical entrance exams.  To gain admission to India’s top law colleges, aspirants must take law entrance exams.

For example, admission to NLUs is done through CLAT; the sole exception is NLU Delhi, which has its own law entrance exam, AILET. Similarly, state-level law entrance exams include the MH CET law which is for admission to 5-year and 3-year LLB degrees in Maharashtra, and the TS LAWCET which is for admission to 3-year and 5-year law schools in Telangana.

Top 5 Law Entrance Exams in India

With multiple impending law entrance exams in India in 2025, it is critical to understand the various aspects of the most important legal entrance exam such as eligibility requirements, exam pattern, sections, participating institutes and how to prepare efficiently.

1. CLAT (Common Law Admission Test)

The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is a centralized national-level entrance exam for admission to 25 of the 27 National Law Universities (NLU), except NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya. Admissions at NLU Delhi are based on the All India Law Entrance Test (AILET). NLU Meghalaya, on the other hand, conducts an entrance exam.

  • Eligibility -10+2 or equivalent exam passed
  • No. of questions – 120
  • Qualifying Cutoff – General/OBC 45%, SC/ST 40%.
  • Exam Duration – 2 Hours
  • Exam Sections –
    Quantitative Techniques
    Reading Comprehension
    Current Affairs, Including GK
    Legal Reasoning
    Logical Reasoning
  • Marking Scheme – +1 for each correct answer, -0.25 for each incorrect answer.
  • Program length – Five years
  • Participating Institutes – All NLU, except NLU Delhi and NLU Meghalaya

2. AILET (All India Law Entrance Test )

The only law admission test in India that is administered and accepted by NLU Delhi. NLU Delhi offers UG and PG courses like BA LLB (Hons) and LLM. Candidates could apply for AILET online.

  • Exam timings: 10 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.
  • Subjects include English, general knowledge and current affairs, legal aptitude, reasoning, and mathematics.
  • Total questions: 150
  • Total marks – 150

3. LSAT India

LSAT India is a law entrance exam administered by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) for admission to undergraduate and graduate law schools in India. Initially, Pearson VUE administered the LSAT India examination on behalf of LSAC. However, beginning in 2020, LSAC has established LSAC Global – Discover Law to conduct and manage the LSAT India entrance exam.

Note –  According to the latest updates the LSAT exam will be discontinued from 2025.

The LSAT India application process was available on the official website, discoverlaw.in. The following are some important details concerning the exam:

  • Exam duration – 2 hours and 20 minutes.
  • Subjects: Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning 1&2, and Reading Comprehension.
  • Total: 92 questions.

4. SLAT 2026

SLAT stands for Symbiosis Law Admission Test. It is a single admission test for Symbiosis Law Schools (SLS) in Pune, Noida, Hyderabad, and Nagpur. The courses offered for entry are BA LLB (Hons), BBA LLB (Hons), BA LLB, and BBA LLB.

  • Eligibility – 10+2 or equivalent exam passed
  • Cutoff: General/OBC 45%, SC/ST 40%.
  • Exam Duration – 1 Hour
  • No. of questions – 60
  • Marking Scheme – There is no negative marking and each correct answer receives a +1.
  • Exam Sections – General Knowledge, Analytical Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning
  • Program length – Three and five years.
  • Participating Institutes – Symbiosis Law Schools (SLS) locations include Pune, Noida, Hyderabad, and Nagpur.

5. MH CET Law Exam

The admission test is held for five-year integrated LLB and three-year LLB programs at Maharashtra state universities and law institutions. The Common Entrance Test Cell (CET Cell) of Maharashtra administers the state-level law entrance test. The MHCET Law exam lasts two hours and is administered in a computer-based examination style. Know the major components of MHCET Law as follows:

  • Exam duration: Two hours.
  • Subjects: English, logical and analytical reasoning, general knowledge, including current events, mathematical aptitude, and legal aptitude.
  • Total questions: 150
  • Total marks – 150

6. LNAT 2025

The Law National Aptitude Test, also known as LNAT, is a standardized test of reading, verbal thinking, critical reasoning, and all other skills required of a candidate to study law. LNAT UK was developed by a consortium of UK universities and is managed by Pearson VUE. It is combined with other admissions processes such as the UCAS application and academic qualifications.

  • Eligibility – 10+2 or a comparable exam.
  • Participating Institutes – JGLS
  • No. of questions – 42
  • Exam Duration – 2 Hour 15 Minutes
  • Exam Sections – Reading & Thinking and Essay Writing
  • Marking Scheme – There is no negative marking and each correct answer receives a +1.

7. NMIMS-LAT / NLAT 2025

The Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies Lawl Aptitude Test (NMIMS LAT) is a law entrance exam offered by SVKM’s NMIMS Deemed-to-be-University.

  • Eligibility – Pass the 10+2 or equivalent examination with at least 50%.
  • Exam Duration – 2 Hours
  • Exam Sections – Verbal Reasoning, Current Affairs, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative reasoning.
  • No. of questions- 150
  • Program length – Five years.
  • Marking Scheme – There is no negative marking and each correct answer receives a +1.
