NIRF Ranking Parameters

The Ministry of Education uses a comprehensive mechanism to rank each of the participating institutions. The NIRF ranking is based on the evaluation of a higher educational institute on five different parameters. They are further divided into different sub-parameters. The details of the five parameters on which the NIRF 2024 ranking is based is given below.

Teaching, Learning & Resources

This parameter takes into account various factors that are summarized below.

  • Student Strength including Doctoral Students (SS)
  • Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR)
  • Combined metric for Faculty with PhD (or equivalent) and Experience (FQE)
  • Financial Resources and their Utilisation (FRU)

Research and Professional Practice

One of the key parameters of the NIRF ranking is the research part. The ranking gives a significant weightage to the research and professional practice to develop high-level research caliber in the higher education institutions. This parameter focuses on the following metrics.

  • Combined metric for Publications (PU)
  • Combined metric for Quality of Publications (QP)
  • IPR and Patents: Published and Granted (IPR)
  • Footprint of Projects and Professional Practice (FPPP)

Graduation Outcome

Graduation outcome is another important parameter as it defines the return on investment. The key considerations for this parameter is given below.

  • Metric for University Examinations (GUE)
  • Metric for Number of Ph.D. Students Graduated (GPHD)

Outreach and Inclusivity

The outreach and inclusivity parameter takes into account the following key components.

  • Percentage of Students from Other States/Countries (Region Diversity RD)
  • Percentage of Women (Women Diversity WD)
  • Economically and Socially Challenged Students (ESCS)
  • Facilities for Physically Challenged Students (PCS)
  • Perception (PR) Ranking

Peer Perception

Peer Perception is another key parameter on which the Ministry of Education assess the institutes for the NIRF ranking.  This is done by taking samples from the Academic Peers and Employers (PR). This is done through a survey conducted over a large category of Employers, Professionals from Reputed Organizations and a large category of academics to ascertain their preference for graduates of different institutions.

National Institutional Ranking Framework- NIRF

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) is an initiative by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, aimed at ranking higher education institutions across the country. Launched in 2015, NIRF evaluates institutions based on several parameters to provide a comprehensive ranking system.

Institutions submit their data online, which is then verified and used to calculate their ranking. NIRF rankings are published annually and cover various categories, such as overall institutions, universities, engineering, management, pharmacy, colleges, medical, law, and architecture.
