He spoke out against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan as India’s permanent representative at the United Nations General Assembly’s sixth emergency special session. However, his dissatisfaction with that job was one of the reasons he left IFS. In addition, after quitting from IFS, he joined the United Nations in 1981 and served as the 6th United Nations Commissioner for Namibia from 1 April 1982 to 1 July 1987.
He also served as the nation’s first National Security Advisor. It took place between November 1998 and May 23, 2004. He was instrumental in establishing a national security management institutional structure. Brajesh Mishra’s batch as an Indian Foreign Service officer was the same as K. Subrahmanyam’s batch as an Indian Administrative Service officer. K. Subrahmanyam is the same person who is largely regarded as India’s strategic affairs doyen. He even appointed him as the first chairperson of the National Security Advisory Board, with whom he collaborated on a number of problems.
