Power- Definition, Symbol and Formula

Power Definition

The quantity of energy moved or converted per unit of time is known as power in physics. The watt, or one joule per second, is the unit of power in the International System of Units. Power is also referred to as activity in ancient writings. Power is a scalar quantity. Power is related to other factors; for instance, the power required to move a ground vehicle is equal to the product of the vehicle’s velocity, traction force on its wheels, and aerodynamic drag. A motor’s output power is calculated by multiplying its torque output by the angular velocity of its output shaft. Similarly, the power dissipated in an electrical component of a circuit is the sum of the voltage across the component times the current passing through it.

Power Formula

The General formula of Power is given by:

Power- Definition, Symbol and Formula_3.1

where,

P is Power

W is Work

F is Force

v is Velocity

The Formula for Electric Power is given by:

{\displaystyle P=I\cdot V=I^{2}\cdot R={\frac {V^{2}}{R}}}

where,

P is Power

I is Electric Current

V is Voltage or Potential difference

R is Resistivity

What is the Unit of Current, Resistance and Voltage?

Power Energy Work

Physics’ three essential notions are work, energy, and power. When a force (push or pull) applied to an item results in the displacement of the object, that force is said to have performed work. Energy is how we define the ability to perform the work. Power is the amount of work completed in a given amount of time.

Work

A force must be applied in order for work to be completed, and there must also be motion or displacement in the force’s direction. The amount of force multiplied by the distance moved in the force’s direction is known as the work done by a force acting on an item. Work has no direction and only magnitude. Work is a scalar quantity as a result.

Energy

The capacity to do work is energy. Energy can only be changed from one form to another; it cannot be created or destroyed. Energy is measured in Joules, the same unit used to measure work. There are several sorts of energy since it is present in many different things.

Power

Power is a physical notion that can have a variety of interpretations depending on the situation and the information at hand. Power is the quantity of energy consumed per unit of time and can be defined as the rate at which work is done.

Power: FAQs

Ques. What does power mean in physics?

Ans. Energy transferred per second is defined as power.

Ques. What is power formula?

Ans. P = E/t is the formula, where P stands for power, E for energy, and t for time in seconds. According to this equation, power is defined as the amount of energy consumed per unit of time.

Ques. What is the unit for power?

Ans. The Unit of Power is Watt.

Ques. What is 1 watt equal to?

Ans. Given that 1 Watt equals 1 Joule per second (1W = 1 J/s), 1 kW equals 1000 J/s. A Watt is the amount of energy (measured in Joules) that a running electrical equipment, such as a light, consumes each second. Therefore, a 60W bulb uses 60 Joules of energy per second that it is on.
