The announcement made by the Education Minister of Assam, Ranoj Pegu, clearly states that the Assam Government will no longer conduct any written exam as a part of their Teacher Selection Process in the upcoming Teacher Recruitment 2023. The focus will be on merit-based evaluation system.
Merit Oriented Approach
Under the new and redefined recruitment policy, the emphasis will shift to a merit-oriented approach, wherein the academic accomplishments of the candidates will be of paramount importance. The evaluation criteria will be based on marks obtained during the academic career of the candidates. Weightage of marks will be allocated to each category or level of education as a distinct evaluation criterion.
Henceforth, the selection process for candidates in Assam will involve a meticulous evaluation across various categories. These distinct categories are assigned specific weightages to determine an individual’s suitability for the teaching roles such as lower primary and upper primary teachers.
Evaluation System
Firstly, candidates’ performance in their Higher Secondary (HS) or its equivalent exams is accorded 5% weightage. This recognizes te foundational knowledge acquired during secondary education. Additionally, a weightage of 10% is assigned to candidates’ graduation marks, highlighting the significance of higher education in shaping an individual’s capabilities.
Furthermore, the policy uniquely acknowledges the importance of specialized training in teaching through a 5% weightage for those holding a Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd). This showcases the state’s dedication to nurturing teachers who are well-equipped to teach young students effectively.
The heart of the revised policy lies in the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), with a substantial 80% weightage. This is a testament to the pivotal role TET plays in assessing a candidate’s suitability for teaching roles, ensuring they possess the required pedagogical knowledge and teaching skills.
Conclusion
This policy overall aspires to create a transparent and fair evaluation mechanism, based on the the candidates’ academic proficiency, teaching training, and subject expertise. This forward-looking shift underscores the importance of blending theoretical understanding with practical teaching prowess and reflects the Assam Government’s commitment to recruiting competent and well- round teachers
