To achieve this, they have set up numerous Army Public Schools across various cities and towns in India. AWES is recognized for its commitment to educational excellence and the holistic development of students at an affordable cost.
What is AWES?
AWES operates 137 Army Public Schools located in cantonments and military stations across India. Established on April 29, 1983, AWES is governed by a Board of Governors (BOG), with the Chief of Army Staff serving as the Patron-in-Chief and Army Commanders as Patrons. The daily operations, following BOG directives, are managed by an Executive Committee led by the Adjutant General and a full-time Secretary, who is a retired officer. Over time, AWES has evolved into its current form under the leadership of a retired Major General.
What Does AWES Stand For?
AWES, or the Army Welfare Education Society, is dedicated to providing not only high-quality education but also instilling strong values and moral principles in its students. The Army Public Schools under AWES are affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and adhere to the NCERT curriculum and textbooks. Since 1987, when the system had a modest student population of 20,000, it has expanded significantly to accommodate around 230,000 students and 8,500 teaching staff. Each year, approximately 5,000 new students join the system.
